Three things that are up in the air: 1. An airplane, 2. A sea of clouds, and 3. The status of Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

It is still unclear whether Porter will suit up in Week 1 due to his contract stalemate with the front office and his back injury. He was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday.

There has been optimism that Porter and the Steelers will agree on a new deal before facing the Falcons. But obviously, time is not on their side. The 26-year-old defender is reportedly seeking an annual salary of $30 million.

Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward was asked about the contract standoff, and he expressed his support for Porter, while also acknowledging the complexity of the situation, as shared by Pittsburgh Tribune-Review’s Chris Adamski.

“I’d like for everybody to get paid. I’d like for everybody to be taken care of. I’m not gonna act like I have every answer to a negotiation. As a player, selfishly, I like everything to be done so we can focus and continue to be locked in,” said Heyward.

“But guys got to get their business done. That’s part of the game. You don’t run from that.”

As Adamski noted, Heyward is the representative of the Steelers on the NFL Players Association.

Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen had a similar stance to Heyward, maintaining that every player should be compensated for his worth.

Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey, meanwhile, stressed Porter’s value to the defense.

“We need the whole secondary out there. (The Steelers) got to pay Joey Porter,” said Ramsey.

Last season, Porter, whom Pittsburgh selected with the No. 32 pick in 2023, registered 52 total tackles, one sack, one interception, and a career-high 14 passes defended.
