Free games on Steam are always a bundle of surprises, with some being surprisingly good for their zero-dollar price point. As it turns out, you don’t always have to spend cash to have fun. The Steam Store hosts more games than you can count, so it’s easy to overlook some of the more promising free options on the platform.
This month we have some notable free game releases you won’t want to overlook. From a competitive TCG to a cute and surprisingly robust Vampire Survivors clone, this month has plenty to offer for the gamer on a micro budget that aren’t demos.
The first free game on offer this month is Hot Mic, an online party game for up to eight players that tasks you and your friends with coming up with soundbites to make each other laugh. Narrate works of art, get your friends to draw works of “art” and give them a voice, imitate animal sounds, and more. The game has 18 different modes to compete and giggle amongst your friends with, and is completely free to play.
If you didn’t get enough horror last month, the hour-long Ceto-7 may sate your need for spooks. A survival horror set in an underwater facility and toting an inventory system reminiscent of Resident Evil 4, Ceto-7 is a short but tense dive as you try to avoid and survive the massive, hungry creature stalking you through the facility’s flooded passageways. This isn’t the only free horror game released on Steam as of late.
The Onion Voting Simulator 3D is another brand new entry on Steam, that tasks you with the arduous task of voting (or not). Being that this is a game from satire website The Onion, you can expect this to be a goofy, surreal, and pseudo-trolling experience. It’s short, but oh so sweet. Don’t come into this one expecting anything deep, but there are worse ways to spend an hour.
Origins Trading Card Game is a totally free TCG where both players (or a player and an AI opponent) battle between three lanes, with both sides taking their turn simultaneously. Dedicated players of the genre might be interested in this more immediately predictive sort of strategy, rather than traditional turn-by-turn gameplay. Developer Koin Games promises all cards can be obtained for free to even the playing field for newcomers and longtime players to be able to compete alike. If you’re in the mood for a new TCG, there’s no risk in trying Origins Trading Card game in November.
Last but certainly not least is Risk It Little Biscuit, which is a top-down Vampire Survivors clone with five different areas to fight through, nine characters to choose from, and more weapons than a free to play Survivors-like has any right to have. Little Biscuit is a great time for fans of the genre, with the added benefit of not costing anything at all. Note that this one does use AI for some of its art assets, which may turn away some.
It’s easy to get lost in the paid game releases on Steam, it’s easy to ignore the free section of the storefront. There are plenty of good and even great titles hiding in the free section on Steam, these five are only a small portion of what you can play without spending a penny.
