Spalletti urges Juventus to take games ‘by the scruff of the neck’

Luciano Spalletti has urged his Juventus players to take games “by the scruff of the neck” after their late rescue act against AC Milan.

Federico Gatti scored a 92nd-minute equaliser as the Bianconeri drew 1-1 with Milan on Sunday, leaving both sides on seven points in Serie A after three games this season.

All eight of Gatti’s Serie A goals have been scored against different opponents, while three of them have come in second-half stoppage time.

Juve and Milan have drawn three consecutive Serie A matches for the first time since November 1973, when they drew four in a row.

However, Juve dominated proceedings at Allianz Stadium, accumulating 1.59 expected goals (xG) from 14 shots while restricting Milan to just 0.11 from three attempts.

While Spalletti saw some positives from the display, he knows his Juve side must show more initiative.

“These are the foundations to build on, because we put in the performance, Juventus pressed them constantly and tried to raise the tempo of the game even at 0-0,” Spalletti told DAZN Italia.

“We had the right intentions, but clearly we need to improve the choices that we make, and not ask permission in these games.

“You can’t wait to be invited, you have to go there and take the game by the scruff of the neck.”

Randal Kolo Muani started for Juve, with summer arrival Nick Woltemade on the bench, but the Frenchman failed to make the desired impact.

He failed to hit the target with his only shot, won only two of his 11 duels and did not create any chances.

Nevertheless, Spalletti chose to stand by his striker.

“I don’t know if it’s a problem, but Nick Woltemade has that capability in the box, so he can be someone to aim for,” added Spalletti.

“With Kolo Muani, I will stay on this path and see at the end where this path takes us. I choose Kolo Muani as a striker and will stick with him to the end of the season.

“When we get there, we’ll see where we are.”
