Dexter: Resurrection season 3 gets a new update from Scott Reynolds.

After the original series ended in 2013 and 2021’s Dexter: New Blood found success with audiences, Michael C. Hall’s beloved serial killer, Dexter Morgan, returned to take New York City in Dexter: Resurrection in 2025. The show was a hit, and Resurrection season 2 is set to premiere on October 30, but there’s been no official confirmation of a season 3.

In a recent interview with That Hollywood Show, Reynolds addresses the chances of Dexter: Resurrection season 3, suggesting that showrunner Clyde Phillips and the creative team don’t see season 2 as the end of the story. Though Reynolds doesn’t yet have a firm answer about additional episodes just yet, he sees season 3 as an opportunity to further explore Dexter’s legacy. Check out his comment below:

“And Season 3, if we get picked up for Season 3, we can talk about Dexter, about his legacy.”

Following the Dexter: Resurrection season 1 ending, season 2 is set to explore Dexter’s life as a 50-year-old man, and all the midlife complications that come with that. As teased in the trailer, this includes needing glasses and reckoning with his place in society as an aging serial killer.

If season 2 follows in season 1’s footsteps, a third season is looking promising. Reviews for Dexter: Resurrection season 1 were glowing, and the show enjoys a 95% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Popcornmeter isn’t far behind at 90%, and this warm audience reception translated into strong viewership, as the show’s premiere became the most-streamed premiere in the history of Showtime on Paramount+.

Season 2 brings with it an impressive cast. Jack Alcott returns as Dexter’s son, Harrison, who is pursuing a career in law enforcement, and Uma Thurman is also returning as Charley, former head of security for the late Leon Prater.

Also returning are James Remar (Harry Morgan), Krysten Ritter (Mia LaPierre/ Lady Vengeance), Eric Stonestreet (Al Walker/ Rapunzel), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (Blessing Kamara), Kadia Sarif (Detective Claudette Wallace), and Dominic Fumusa (Detective Melvin Oliva). Demond Harrington is also back as Joey Quinn.

The 10-episode sophomore outing for Resurrection also includes a host of newcomers, including Brian Cox, Dan Stevens, Bokeem Woodbine, Gabriel Luna, and Nona Parker. Cox, Stevens, and Luna all play serial killers and are set to be a major new threat for Dexter, and Quinn’s return is also sure to be an added source of pressure.

Though the original struggled critically in its later seasons, New Blood and Resurrection have served as a breath of fresh air for the franchise, confirming that Dexter can successfully live on outside of his role as a blood spatter analyst for Miami Metro. Resurrection, especially, has clearly put the character in a setting that has struck a chord with viewers, and season 1 suggests there could be plenty of story runway left.

Whether Resurrection returns for season 3 remains to be seen, but viewership is sure to be a primary factor. With such a strong cast and so much good will from season 1, season 2 is shaping up to continue the show’s success. An official renewal for season 3 may not take long after season 2’s premiere.

Dexter: Resurrection season 2 premieres Friday, October 30, on Paramount+.
