Luciano Spalletti believes Juventus’ Europa League matchup with Rennes will be a “maturity test” for his side.
Juve are top of the league phase table after two matchdays following a 5-0 win over NEC and 2-1 victory over Celta Vigo, but their Serie A form has suffered.
The Bianconeri are eighth in Serie A after seven games following a 3-0 home defeat to Lazio, who are eight points ahead of Juve in second – level on points with leaders Inter.
Juve have lost two of their last five Serie A home games (W2 D1), as many defeats as they recorded in their previous 44 top-flight matches at the Allianz Stadium (W24 D18).
Nevertheless, they have won their last four home major European matches, scoring 12 goals and conceding two, and Spalletti desires a professional performance against Rennes.
When asked why Juve’s results have differed in Serie A and the Europa League, Spalletti said: “There’s no specific reason. Every match has its own history, and you have to react to what the opposition brings each time.

“You need to understand the consequences of their approach and know when to press and when to stick back. We have to be more decisive when we make a choice.
“Rennes is strong on the open field and physically.
“They have fast attackers and the [Ligue 1] top scorer, Lepaul. They are having a good season; they are sixth, but one point below the top spot, so they have enthusiasm, and for us it is a maturity test.
“We must be good at determining things with our attitude.”
Juve and Rennes met in the 1999 UEFA Intertoto Cup final, with the Italian side winning 4-2 on aggregate (2-0 home, 2-2 away).
In all European competition, Rennes have lost all four of their away matches in Italy, losing to a different team each time (Juve, Udinese, Lazio, AC Milan).
