Sean Bean’s Horror Cult Classic Roars Back To Life On Streaming At The Perfect Time

Sean Bean’s most memorable horror movie has found a new life on streaming, more than 20 years after its divisive theatrical debut. The Game of Thrones alum has notable roles in many horror movies, such as 2005’s The Dark with Maria Bello, 2010’s Black Death with Eddie Redmayne, and 2020’s Possessor with Andrea Riseborough. For two seasons, Sean Bean also starred in the gothic horror crime drama series The Frankenstein Chronicles, which featured the acclaimed actor playing an investigator.

During the 2000s, Bean played many notable roles in iconic movies, including Boromir in The Lord of the Rings franchise, Ian Howe in National Treasure, and Odysseus in Troy. While Bean found success in these adventure epics, he also ventured into the horror genre with the live-action adaptation of Konami’s popular video game series Silent Hill. Although it received unfavorable reviews from critics during its initial run, Sean Bean’s Silent Hill movie has now bounced back by finding its way to the streaming charts.

As of this writing, Silent Hill has officially secured the tenth spot on HBO Max’s top 10 movies chart worldwide. It also currently holds the seventh spot in more than ten countries, such as Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Venezuela. During its theatrical run, the 2006 adaptation grossed around $100 million at the box office against a budget of $50 million. On the streaming platform’s global movies chart, Bean’s underrated classic is placed below multiple supernatural horror movies, including Resident Evil: Afterlife, Evil Dead Burn, The Covenant, and Doctor Sleep, the last of which is set at number one.

The first Silent Hill movie was directed by Christophe Gans, with Sony Pictures serving as its distributor in the US. The story begins with Rose, a mother trying to solve the mystery behind her adopted daughter’s origins. However, her search for answers unexpectedly traps her and Sharon in a purgatory-like dimension run by an evil cult and terrifying monsters. Besides Bean, the film was also led by Radha Mitchell as Rose Da Silva, Jodelle Ferland as Sharon Da Silva/ Alessa Gillespie, Laurie Holden as Cybil, Kim Coates as Officer Gucci, and Alice Krige as Christabella.

Upon its release, 2006’s Silent Hill movie was widely panned by critics, who felt that it had an incoherent plot and unorthodox narrative structure. However, over time, the adaptation garnered a cult following, with modern horror fans praising the film’s eerie visuals and horrifying creature designs. As a result, the franchise spawned two sequels: 2012’s Silent Hill: Revelation with Kit Harington and 2026’s Return to Silent Hill with Jeremy Irvine. Both movies also received negative reception from critics and fans, who didn’t think that the sequels lived up to the original film’s legacy.

Following Return to Silent Hill‘s underwhelming release, a new Silent Hill reboot movie is being developed by Roy Lee, who recently produced Zach Cregger’s Austin Abrams-led Resident Evil movie. Meanwhile, Konami has been successful in reviving the video game franchise, with the releases of Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake, NeoBards Entertainment’s Silent Hill f, and Screen Burn Interactive’s Silent Hill: Townfall.
