The inaugural Moby Rise & Rally high school volleyball event sure got a memorable nightcap to its first edition.

Rocky Mountain ended Fossil Ridge dominance nearly a decade in the making, stunning the SaberCats in a dramatic 3-1 upset win (23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-21) on Sept. 16 at CSU’s Moby Arena.

This wasn’t just a highly-ranked team falling.

No, Fossil Ridge had absolutely run the city of Fort Collins on the volleyball court, not to mention three straight Class 5A semifinal trips.

That included 31 straight wins against city opponents. No losses to city rivals since 2018. And an 11-match winning streak vs. Rocky.

The Lobos took an eraser to all of it in a thrilling night on a volleyball court where CSU has delivered its own share of high-level wins.

Rocky Mountain didn’t squeeze out a few close sets, either.

Rocky largely controlled the entire match, even running off 33 out of 41 points from the middle of the third set through the middle of the fourth.

The Lobos did it every which way. They came back from a 17-9 deficit in the third. Then, they raced out to a 16-4 lead in the final frame and held off a furious Fossil charge.

When it was all done, the emotion poured out in a postgame pseudo-dogpile.

Security moderated a court-storming of sorts, as hundreds of Lobos students dressed in all black relished their conquering heroes.

This was almost a straight sweep. Rocky barely dropped a tight opening set and then roared to an 11-point second-set romp.

It seemed like a match destined for five sets.

Instead, the Lobos made a strong statement that should put Colorado on notice.

These Lobos (8-3) are the real deal, sitting inside the Class 5A top 10 and sure to move up after beating the third-ranked SaberCats.

This won’t be the last time we see this city matchup, either.

The two squads will face off again on Fossil’s home court Oct. 13 in an anticipated follow-up to a special night in Fort Collins volleyball.
