One week after providing a spark off the bench and nearly orchestrating a 24-point comeback, J.J. McCarthy will start for the New York Giants.
On Wednesday, John Harbaugh confirmed that McCarthy will start for the Giants against the Houston Texans in Week 7. McCarthy replaced Jameis Winston in the fourth quarter of last week’s game against the New Orleans Saints, completing 11 of 21 passes for 243 yards, one touchdown, and an interception.
When McCarthy entered the game, New York trailed 34-10. With 12 seconds remaining in regulation, the Giants had the ball at the Saints’ 14-yard line, trailing 34-27, before an incompletion on 4th-and-1 ended the comeback.
“Starting with [GM] Joe (Schoen) and his whole staff… [J.J.] was their recommendation of who they thought we should go after and who we should want,” Harbaugh told reporters on Wednesday.
The Giants acquired McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings last month in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick. This will be McCarthy’s first start since Week 18 last year with the Vikings, when he completed 14 of 23 passes for 182 yards before exiting the game in the third quarter. He has ten career starts entering Sunday.
