World Test Championship 2025–2027 Final Qualification: Scenarios for India, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa

With less than a year left before the next World Test Championship final, nine teams are still in the race for two places at The Oval, and the table is starting to separate the contenders from the rest. Australia hold the top spot, South Africa have found form again after their win in Gqeberha, and India are now fighting an uphill battle.

The Oval has been confirmed as the venue, and the match will be played from Wednesday, June 9 to Sunday, June 13. The ICC announced last year that England had won the hosting rights for the next three finals, in 2027, 2029 and 2031, and the England and Wales Cricket Board picks the ground for each edition.

This will be the second time The Oval stages the showpiece, after Australia beat India there in 2023 to lift the mace.

The first three editions have each produced a different champion. New Zealand won the inaugural title in 2021, Australia took the mace in 2023, and South Africa ended their long wait for a major ICC trophy in 2025.

Australia’s path to the WTC final: Cape Town and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Australia are the top contender, with a points percentage of 75.00. Their remaining fixtures include the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town, afour-match Test series against New Zealand, followed by the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India in early 2027.

They need roughly three wins from their remaining 10 Tests to cross the 65% mark, and even a split of results across Cape Town and India should keep Pat Cummins’ side in the top two.

South Africa’s WTC final chances after the Gqeberha win

South Africa stand on 66.67%, and their innings win in Gqeberha has kept the defending champions well within reach of the final. If Temba Bavuma’s team win the decider in Cape Town and then dominate their series against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, they could finish above 68%, which would put heavy pressure on New Zealand and India.

New Zealand’s WTC final path: why home wins are essential

New Zealand are on 72.22%, and they have played only six matches, so they hold a strong base.

Their coming schedule is demanding, with a two-Test home series against India in late November, followed by a trip to Australia. Winning at home is a must if they want to hold off South Africa.

India’s WTC final qualification scenario: the maths for Gill’s side

India are fifth with 51.52% after a draw in Colombo and lost points earlier in the cycle. They have seven Tests left, worth 84 points, and they must win at least five and draw one, or win six, to reach a safe mark of around 64%.

They cannot afford more than one defeat across the New Zealand tour and the home series against Australia combined.

A clean sweep or a 4-1 win over Australia at home, along with at least one victory in New Zealand, remains the ideal route to The Oval.

Why India’s WTC final hopes depend on the New Zealand tour

India’s position is difficult, but it is not hopeless, and the next five weeks may decide how realistic it is. The New Zealand series comes before the Australia home series, so a poor result there would leave almost no margin for error.

Even a single defeat would put the 64% target at risk, which is a harsh mathematical reality for a team that has lost ground through draws.

The home series is more promising on paper, since the venues suit India’s spinners and Australia have historically struggled in those conditions. A big win there, however, will not mean much if the New Zealand games are lost, and the pitches in Wellington and Christchurch could test a batting line-up that has not always travelled well.

The projections give India only a 3% chance, which seems low, but the figure reflects how few wins they can afford to drop. The approach should be to look at it one Test at a time, and a strong start in New Zealand would change the tone of the whole season.
