The wait for Adley Rutschman’s Boston Red Sox debut is nearly over. Rutschman will travel with the Red Sox to Toronto on Sunday night after completing a two-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester. He will work out with the club at Rogers Centre on Monday before Boston determines when to activate him from the injured list.

There will be no roster move before Monday’s series opener against the Blue Jays, according to MassLive’s Christopher Smith. However, MLB.com’s Ian Browne reported Rutschman could make his Red Sox debut as soon as Tuesday.

That means Boston’s biggest trade deadline addition may be only one game away from joining one of baseball’s hottest teams.

Rutschman Passes First Major Tests

The Red Sox acquired Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles on Aug. 3, but left wrist inflammation prevented the three-time All-Star from immediately joining Boston’s lineup. Rutschman had not played since July 18 before beginning his rehab assignment Saturday.

His first game in the organization offered several encouraging signs.

Rutschman caught five innings, threw out a runner attempting to steal and drilled a two-run double. He also walked twice and scored two runs during Worcester’s 19-0 victory over Lehigh Valley.

Adley Rutschman will fly to Toronto with the Red Sox tonight, work out with the team tomorrow and could be active as soon as Tuesday.

Boston used him as the designated hitter Sunday, giving Rutschman another opportunity to test his wrist without placing the physical demands of catching on his body. He finished the two-game assignment 1-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two walks. The statistics were less important than how the wrist responded to swinging, receiving and throwing.

Rutschman apparently cleared those initial hurdles. Rather than remain with Worcester for additional games, he will rejoin the Major League club and continue his preparation in Toronto.

Red Sox Take Cautious Approach With New Star

The Red Sox could activate Rutschman immediately if they believed he was ready, but waiting through Monday gives the medical staff another day to evaluate his recovery. It also provides Rutschman with an opportunity to work directly with Boston’s pitchers.

The 28-year-old spent his first five Major League seasons with Baltimore and has extensive familiarity with the American League East. Learning an entirely new pitching staff in the middle of a postseason race remains a substantial undertaking. Rutschman said after the trade that he planned to meet individually with pitchers to understand how they prefer to attack hitters. Monday’s workout should help accelerate that process before he catches his first game for Boston.

The Red Sox also will have to make a roster move when they activate him. Jake Rogers and Connor Wong currently are handling the catching duties, and Boston must determine how playing time will be divided once Rutschman returns.

There is no question who becomes the primary option.

Rutschman is batting .251 with eight home runs, 47 RBIs and a .764 OPS across 67 games this season. His defensive work, pitch framing and ability to control the running game made him one of the most complete catchers available at the deadline.

Boston paid an enormous price to acquire him, sending Carlos Narváez and three highly regarded prospects to Baltimore. The deal only makes sense if Rutschman plays a major role during the playoff push.

That process should begin this week.

The Red Sox lost two of three games to the Athletics at Fenway Park but still have won eight of their last 10. They enter the Toronto series holding the second American League Wild Card spot at 64-53.

Boston already has created considerable momentum without Rutschman. As soon as Tuesday, the Red Sox finally could add their new All-Star catcher to the middle of it.
