Worth the wait: Myles Garrett dominates Commanders in Rams return

Nearly two months to the day, Myles Garrett finally made his return to the field for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. It was his first game since the season opener in Australia, which was a major letdown to begin with. But after that loss to the 49ers, he said it was the “worst version” of himself that he could’ve put out there, lamenting his zero-tackle, zero-sack performance in Week 1.

In Sunday’s 20-13 win over the Washington Commanders, he showed everyone what the Rams traded for.

Needless to say, his return after seven games on the sidelines was worth the wait. He finished with just three tackles, but all three of those tackles were sacks on Jayden Daniels. The first was a strip-sack when the elusive quarterback tried to escape the pocket, as Garrett knocked the ball out of his hands and it was scooped up by Omar Speights.

It didn’t have the feel of a traditional sack, but it was a terrific play by the Rams star to force the takeaway.

His second sack was great, beating the left tackle to the outside before working back inside to corral Daniels before he could get away.

It’s the type of play Garrett has been making throughout his career, bringing down even the quickest and most dynamic quarterbacks.

Ladies and gentlemen… another sack from Myles Garrett 😤

As if two sacks in his return weren’t enough, he added a third for good measure.

On this one, he lined up as a stand-up rusher over the center, beat him with an NBA-style euro step and brought Daniels down for a huge loss. On the play prior, Garrett was flagged for jumping across the line early, so he more than made up for it with this sack in the fourth quarter.

Euro-step for the sack is crazy 😭

Pro Football Focus‘ grades and stats aren’t finalized, but they illustrate how dominant Garrett was against the Commanders.

He was credited with a whopping nine pressures in only 30 pass-rush snaps, with three of those pressures being sacks. Garrett also landed another hit on the quarterback, giving him four for the game. As of now, his grade is an eye-popping 94.5, with a pass-rush mark of 94.6.

After the game, Garrett was asked how much this return meant to him.

“Honestly, it means so goddamn much,” he said.

Garrett said he hasn’t faced this kind of adversity before in his career, having missed the last seven games while rehabbing a knee injury that required surgery. It’s not something any player wants to go through, but there’s no question he looks significantly better now than he did in that opener when he was clearly not 100% healthy – something he admitted himself in Week 1.

If the Rams get this version of Garrett every week, and once they get Trent McDuffie back in the secondary, they’re going to be a scary unit to face.
