When the Boston Red Sox made a trade for Adley Rutschman at the Major League Baseball trade deadline, it was obvious that everything was going to be looked at under a microscope. Rutschman, undoubtedly one of the better catchers in Major League Baseball, has struggled a tad. 

He’s currently hitting .170 with a .499 OPS. The reality, however, is that Rutschman is coming back from an injury and has played only 15 games. 

To make any assumptions off 53 at-bats would be ridiculous, which is why it’s good to hear Craig Breslow come out and say that he can’t grade this trade after a month.

“I don’t think it can be graded a month after the trade,” Breslow said, per Boston.com. 

“We knew what we were getting with Adley. We obviously were able to go through the medical and get comfortable with it. This is a situation where he took a swing and felt like he hyperextended the right elbow, and there’s some residual irritation and bruising that we can manage, and that he can play [through]. We’re just trying to kind of straddle the line of when is it best to give him some rest and maybe be able to get out to the other side of this versus having him in the lineup.”

The Red Sox knew when they traded for Rutschman that he was dealing with an injury. 

They were hoping to get the 2023 and 2024 versions of him, when he hit 20 and 19 home runs, respectively. Both seasons saw him post an OPS above .700, including 2023 when he posted an .809 OPS.
