Ransom payments could sustain bandit networks – IHRC-RFT

The International Human Rights Commission–Relief Fund Trust (IHRC-RFT) has warned that paying ransoms to criminal groups could help sustain bandit networks while exposing innocent citizens to continued abductions, violence and trauma.

The organisation called on the Federal Government to intensify security operations, dismantle bandit networks and cut off their sources of funding to tackle banditry and kidnapping across the country.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Nigeria chapter of IHRC-RFT, through its Country Director, Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, said it supported the position of Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, on the dangers of ransom payments to criminal groups.

The organisation said ransom payments could strengthen criminal networks, making it necessary for the government to take urgent steps to address the security challenges.

“We urge the Federal Government to strengthen intelligence-led operations, dismantle bandit networks, secure vulnerable communities and ensure the safe rescue of all abducted persons,” the organisation said.

“Refusing to finance criminals must go hand in hand with effective protection of citizens,” the statement said.

IHRC-RFT stressed that efforts to discourage ransom payments must be accompanied by effective security measures to protect lives and prevent further abductions.

“The Federal Government must act decisively to end banditry and kidnapping, protect the lives of Nigerians and restore lasting peace across the country,” the organisation said.
