99-Year-Old NASCAR Fan Finally Gets Her Dream Ride at Michigan Speedway

For nearly 70 years, Shirley Hipple experienced NASCAR the same way millions of fans do: from the comfort of her living room, watching the cars race around the track on television.

But at 99 years old, with her 100th birthday approaching, Hipple finally got to experience something she’d spent decades watching from afar.

She climbed into a stock car at Michigan International Speedway and went for a ride.

The experience, arranged through a senior living community’s adventure program, gave the longtime NASCAR fan a chance to hear the engines, feel the speed and see the track from a perspective she had only imagined.

And after seven decades of following the sport, it was quite a way to celebrate a milestone birthday.

A NASCAR Dream Nearly 70 Years in the Making

Hipple’s love for racing dates back to the 1950s, when she took her young children to dirt tracks near Groesbeck Highway and Eight Mile Road in Detroit.

What began as family outings developed into a lifelong passion. She followed NASCAR through generations of drivers, championship battles and changes to the sport, rarely missing a race on television.

Her favorite driver became seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, whose jacket she proudly wore as part of her racing collection.

According to Kinship Company, Hipple even turned her room at Waltonwood Carriage Park in Canton, Michigan, into a tribute to the sport she loved.

But there was one experience she had never checked off her list: actually riding in a stock car.

That changed in September.

Through Waltonwood’s Adventure program, which helps residents fulfill longtime wishes, Hipple traveled to Michigan International Speedway for a NASCAR ride-along.

Dressed in racing gear and secured inside the car, she experienced the speed and banking of the two-mile oval firsthand.

For someone who had spent nearly 70 years watching NASCAR on television, it was an entirely different way to appreciate the sport.

Michigan Speedway Visit Gives NASCAR Superfan an Unforgettable Birthday Gift

The ride wasn’t the only highlight of Hipple’s visit.

She also received a behind-the-scenes tour of pit road, giving her an up-close look at a part of NASCAR that fans typically experience only through television coverage.

The trip was especially meaningful because it connected Hipple’s earliest memories of racing in Detroit with one of Michigan’s most recognizable motorsports venues.

Sara Bailey, vice president of sales for Waltonwood, said the experience reflected the purpose of the community’s Adventure program.

“At Waltonwood, we believe that passions don’t fade with age,” Bailey said. “Seeing Shirley’s lifelong dream come true is what our Adventure program is all about.”

Hipple’s story is a reminder of something NASCAR fans understand particularly well: A connection to racing can last a lifetime.

Drivers retire, teams change and the cars evolve, but the excitement that first draws someone to the sport can remain remarkably familiar.

For Hipple, that excitement began at local dirt tracks in the 1950s and eventually carried her all the way to Michigan International Speedway.

Now, as she approaches her 100th birthday, she has a new racing memory to add to a collection nearly seven decades in the making.

And this time, she didn’t have to watch it on television.
