Buccaneers overcome 14 penalties in first win of season

The Buccaneers finally earned their first win of the 2026 season Thursday night, but they did not make it easy on themselves. Tampa Bay committed 14 penalties for 92 yards in its 24-16 win over the Dallas Cowboys, doubling Dallas’ seven penalties for 57 yards and repeatedly putting itself in tougher situations than necessary.

The most damaging mistake came late in the first half. Tampa Bay reached the Dallas 43-yard line and was preparing to give Chase McLaughlin a chance from 61 yards, but a delay-of-game penalty pushed the Bucs back five yards and forced them to punt instead. Dallas later added a field goal before halftime, sending Tampa Bay into the locker room trailing 10-7.

The penalties also showed up during otherwise promising sustained possessions. Tampa Bay had negative penalty yardage on multiple drives, including a third-quarter touchdown drive that still covered 75 net yards and another scoring drive that ended with McLaughlin’s 41-yard field goal. The Bucs also lost eight yards to penalties during an 8:14 fourth-quarter possession that helped drain the clock before eventually ending on downs.

What made Thursday night different from Tampa Bay’s first four games was that the mistakes did not completely derail the offense. The Buccaneers still finished with 419 total yards, 241 rushing yards, and 24 first downs, converting 7 of their 13 third-down attempts. They also controlled the ball for 39:21, giving themselves enough margin to overcome the flags without losing control of the game.

That does not mean the penalties can be dismissed because Tampa Bay won. Fourteen flags for 92 yards are still far too many for a team that has spent much of the season playing close games with little room for error. Against Dallas, the Bucs were good enough on the ground, efficient enough with Jalon Daniels, and disruptive enough defensively to survive those mistakes, but that will not always be the case.

The encouraging part is that Tampa Bay finally showed it could overcome adversity without unraveling. The Bucs found a way to win despite repeatedly hurting themselves, but cleaning up the penalties should remain one of the biggest priorities coming out of their first victory.
