The San Diego Padres knew an NL West title would be hard this season, and that certainly is the case. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been great this year, and with the addition of Tarik Skubal, could be much better down the stretch.
But that doesn’t mean the Padres’ playoff hopes are done. They can still get in via the wild card, but they have some work to do. They are currently two games from the last spot in the NL.
However, they made some moves ahead of the deadline that should help their chances, while keeping their flamethrower closer, Mason Miller.

Padres jump nine spots in power rankings following aggressive deadline buying
The Padres were able to add some much-needed pitching ahead of the deadline. They acquired Robbie Ray and cash from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for RHP Miguel Mendez and SS Joniel Hernandez.
They were also able to acquire Casey Mize and Gage Workman from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for LHP Kash Mayfield and LHP Jackson Wolf.
San Diego did lose some solid farm system attributes, but they are committed to the postseason. With this, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter bumps them up quite a few spots in his post-deadline power rankings from No. 19 to No. 10.
“Much of the talk surrounding the Padres in the days and weeks leading up to the deadline centered around selling, most notably superstar closer Mason Miller and rental setup man Adrian Morejon. Instead, they were one of the league’s most aggressive buyers, adding Casey Mize and Robbie Ray to the rotation in another round of gutting the farm system by AJ Preller.”
San Diego still has some work to do, but the fans should feel a lot better about this team after the deadline. They have seemingly reinforced a fragile rotation and could get much better when Joe Musgrove looks to make his return later this month.
