Matthew Stafford isn’t concerned about the soreness in his throwing arm, even as the Los Angeles Rams quarterback continues to manage the wear and tear of another NFL season.
Stafford addressed the issue Wednesday after head coach Sean McVay revealed earlier in the week that the 38-year-old had been dealing with soreness in his right arm. Stafford said he’s been icing throughout the season but doesn’t consider the discomfort anything unusual for this point in the schedule.
“I’m 38 years old, trying to keep up with these young bucks. Little bit of soreness and stuff that is not uncommon this time of year,” Stafford said, via the Los Angeles Times‘ Gary Klein. “Haven’t missed a rep. Feel good. So I’m not too worried about it.”
Stafford was spotted leaving the locker room after Sunday’s 24-9 win over the Los Angeles Chargers with a bag of ice on his right elbow, prompting questions about his health. However, he hasn’t missed any time this season and has continued to take every practice and game rep.
The veteran quarterback has dealt with elbow issues before, undergoing surgery during the 2022 offseason. He ultimately missed eight games that season because of a concussion and spinal cord contusion.
Stafford and the Rams have bigger aspirations this year after the quarterback returned for his 18th NFL season following an MVP campaign. Los Angeles is 4-4 through eight games, with Stafford throwing for 2,146 yards, 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
The Rams are counting on Stafford to lead another playoff push, and his comments suggest there’s little reason for immediate concern about his throwing arm. He’ll take on the Washington Commanders in Week 9.
