When the Red Sox acquired Curtis Mead from the Nationals, they helped boost their lineup ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline. However, Mead’s injury in his Boston debut may have changed the team’s deadline plans once again.

On Thursday, interim manager Chad Tracy said Mead’s “non-displaced fracture” in his left wrist will not require surgery, so the Red Sox won’t be ruling him out for the rest of the season, per MLB.com. Still, his injury means that another infield acquisition could be in play for Boston.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Will Sammon and Katie Woo reported Friday that the team is eyeing “additional infield help,” including some former All-Star names.

The Red Sox have expressed interest in Marlins infielders Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards, per The Athletic. With the Red Sox reportedly eyeing a shortstop, either player could be capable of playing the position.

Another infielder who “could appeal” to Boston, per The Athletic, is the Tigers’ Gleyber Torres. The second baseman is a three-time All-Star, including in 2025, and he has posted a .775 OPS over 52 games this season. Previous reports have also linked the Red Sox to Angels shortstop Zach Neto.

Lopez, 27, began his MLB career with the Blue Jays, but he has emerged as an elite bat-to-ball threat since joining the Marlins in 2024. He was named an All-Star for the first time this season.

As of Friday, Lopez ranks second in MLB in batting average (.325) and first in hits (138).

Edwards was traded as a prospect by both the Padres and Rays before landing in Miami. Now 26, he emerged as another strong contact hitter in 2024 by hitting .328 over 70 games.

Gleyber Torres stats

Torres, meanwhile, is more of a veteran option. He’s been around in MLB since 2018, spending seven years with the Yankees before signing with the Tigers in 2024.

The 29-year-old also offers some power. He hit a career-high 38 home runs back in 2019, though he hasn’t hit more than 20 in a single season since 2023.
