Newcastle confirm Eddie Howe departure

Eddie Howe has stepped down as Newcastle United head coach, bringing an end to a hugely successful near five-year spell at St James’ Park.

The 48-year-old informed the club of his decision after a difficult summer, with Newcastle confirming his departure in an official statement. Howe said the decision came after “a period of personal reflection” and believes now is the right time to move on.

Since taking charge following the club’s Saudi-backed takeover in 2021, Howe transformed Newcastle into one of the Premier League’s leading sides. He guided the Magpies to Champions League qualification on two occasions and famously ended the club’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by winning the League Cup.

However, last season proved far more challenging. Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League, while the departures of key players including Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali left the squad in transition. Captain Bruno Guimarães has also expressed a desire to leave, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the club.

Reports suggest Howe had been considering his future for several weeks, with disagreements over the club’s long-term direction also playing a part in his decision.

Newcastle are already well advanced in their search for a replacement, with former Al-Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle emerging as the leading candidate to take over ahead of the new season.
