Ole Miss football lands commitment from Colton Johnson, 2027 TE from Upperman

Upperman junior tight end Colton Johnson has committed to Ole Miss football, according to a post on his X account on July 9.

Johnson, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound three-star prospect, is ranked No. 28 among 2027 prospects in Tennessee, according to 247Sports Composite.

His recruitment surged in the spring, with some of college football’s top programs getting involved, including Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana, Ohio State and Oregon. His other offers included Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Florida State and Ole Miss.

“I got a few (offers) during the (2025) season. But as soon as I posted my junior season tape is when it really kind of took off,” Johnson told The Tennessean in March. “Then during the contact period, they wanted to come and see me. Once my junior film got out there, (offers) started coming in.”

Johnson is believed to be just the second Upperman football player to receive an FBS offer.

He finished the 2025 TSSAA football season with 37 catches for 615 yards and four touchdowns. Upperman went 9-3, losing in the second round of the playoffs to eventual Class 4A state champion Alcoa. At linebacker, Johnson had 133 tackles and was named the Region 4-4A Defensive MVP.

Johnson was a TSWA All-State selection at linebacker, and a few schools have expressed interest in him playing both ways, he said. But he’s primarily a tight end target.

He’s also a standout basketball player, averaging 12.4 points and 9.5 rebounds this past season for Upperman, while shooting 54.4% from the field. He helped the Bees reach the Class 3A state semifinals.

“It’s been fun. It’s a good experience for me and my family and my friends,” Johnson told The Tennessean in March about his recruitment. “I think it’s brought a lot of good attention (to Upperman). People have realized we’re better than they thought. I like that it’s bringing attention to the school more than anything.”

After long talks and prayers with my family I am blessed to be able to make this decision. I’m excited to announce I’ll be committing to @OleMissFB !!!🦈🦈🦈🔴🔵 @CoachWoodiel@CoachGolding@ChadSimmons_@TomLoy247@kam_wicker@Hayesfawcett3@BaxterFootball#agtgpic.twitter.com/7TzcI3FYLA
