Bowie's defense dominates Hays, sets up massive 26-6A game next week vs Dripping Springs

Bowie defensive tackle Cade Venable spent much of Thursday night being a nuisance to Hays’ offensive line and slamming Hawks ball carriers to the ground. With three-and-a-half minutes left in the second quarter, Bowie teammate Marrell Hinton deflected a pass straight into the air and Venable made a diving catch at Hays’ 31-yard line just before the ball hit the turf.

Two plays later, Bowie running back Rhys Moreno ran in for the second of his three first-half touchdowns, giving the Bulldogs a 20-point lead.

Venable’s interception was the first pick of his life, he told the American-Statesman after Bowie’s 36-6 win at Burger Stadium. It was one of many defensive highlights the Bulldogs (5-1, 2-0) had against the Hawks (4-3, 1-2), and the win sets up a matchup next week with Dripping Springs that will likely decide the District 26-6A champion.

“Just getting after the quarterback and not giving them a lot of time to throw,” Venable said when asked about the success of the Bowie defense, which has given up nine points in its last two games. “Then our (defensive backs) are doing great, they’re covering guys, they’re not letting anybody get open. We work as a tandem, we get pressure, the DBs – they lock up, which allows us to get more sacks.”

Bowie’s defense made an immediate impact. After the Bulldogs offense marched 70 yards, culminating with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Connor O’Dea to Luke Katz (his first touchdown catch of the season), defensive back Cooper Medeiros snagged an interception on Hays’ first offensive snap.

Bowie didn’t turn the interception into points, but the defense maintained the lead well into the second quarter when Moreno ran for a 15-yard touchdown with less than four minutes left in the half. The score came two plays after a fourth-and-long sack, as well as a 15-yard penalty after the whistle, gave the Bulldogs possession at the Hays 37.

The next drive ended with Venable’s interception to set up Moreno’s 1-yard score, which was preceded by a 30-yard run by the senior. Bowie started in Hays territory again on its next drive after Hawks punter Joseph Torres fumbled a snap and was tackled at the 23-yard line. Moreno added a second 1-yard touchdown with barely over a minute left in the second quarter, his third score in three minutes.

The senior running back finished with 153 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries, an average of 8.5 yards per run. Part of his success, he said, was aided by a defense that controlled the game.

“It really helps to have a defense to back you up,” said Moreno, who has 1,113 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on the season. “You don’t know if you’re going to score. So if you go, don’t score, you know that the defense is there for you.”

Bowie added a field goal from D.J. De La Pena and a touchdown from backup quarterback Deuce Brown in the second half to extend the lead to 36 points. Hays running back Gabriel Peach scored late and finished with 156 yards on 22 carries in addition to the touchdown, serving as one of the few bright spots for an offense that otherwise struggled.

However, the Hawks aren’t the only team to sputter against the Bulldogs defense in recent weeks. On Sept. 25, Austin High kicked a field goal in the first quarter against Bowie, but was shut out for the rest of the game as the Bulldogs won 31-3. The week before, Stony Point led Bowie 21-16 midway through the second quarter. The Tigers were held silent for the rest of the game as Bowie pulled away for a 47-21 win.

The Bulldogs are allowing 18.5 points per game this season and have playmakers all over the defense. Medeiros, who grabbed his second interception in as many games Thursday, and linebacker Alec Zarate, who played a part in three sacks, are two prominent examples. But the strength of this unit is the defensive line group of Venable, Hinton and Hendrix York. The trio combined for 12 sacks and 29 tackles for loss entering the game against Hays, and each notched at least one tackle for loss Thursday.

“They’re tough. They’re good players,” Bowie coach Jeff Ables said of the defensive line. “We were hoping they would dominate the line of scrimmage, and we got good games out of all three of those guys.”

After securing his first interception, Venable is now searching for another first: his first win over Dripping Springs. The Bulldogs have lost to the Tigers (5-1, 3-0) in each of the last four years, including one-possession defeats in the previous two contests. The winner on Oct. 16 at Tiger Stadium will be a significant favorite to win out and take the district title.

After falling in tight contests the last two years, Venable is confident this could be the year Bowie defeats Dripping Springs.

“Our offense is great, and then as a defense we’re stopping guys, we’re not letting anybody get yards,” he said. “We’re getting after the QB, and against a team like Drip who throws the ball a lot, we need to get after the QB.

“That’s what we’re going to do next week,” Venable added, “and it’s going to be a great game.”
