NY Mets announce lineup vs Baltimore Orioles for Monday game

NEW YORK — Monday night’s game for the Mets fans is not as much about who is in the home side’s lineup as it is who is in the heart of the Orioles’ batting order.

Pete Alonso will be making his return to Citi Field for the first time since joining the Orioles in the offseason as the Mets welcome the AL East foes to open their final homestand of the season at 7:10 p.m. in Flushing.

Alonso is one home run away from No. 300 as he meets the major league squad where he spent seven seasons after being drafted by the organization a decade ago in 2016.

The Mets will be looking to shake off a series loss to the Yankees after they were held to three hits in a 2-0 loss on Sunday despite six quality innings from Christian Scott.

The Orioles, meanwhile, still have a longshot chance to make the postseason as they enter the week at four games back of the Guardians for the final AL Wild Card spot.

Jonah Tong will be making his second start since being called up on Sept. 7. In his first start of the season, Tong allowed four earned runs on four hits and one walk and seven strikeouts in five innings against the Marlins.

All four of those runs against Tong came in one inning, and he settled in from there. With three additional relief appearances, Tong is now 2-1 with a 4.80 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 14 strikeouts in 15 innings.

The Mets will go up against Orioles right-hander Brandon Young, who is 9-4 with a 3.71 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 25 starts. He is coming off one of his worst starts of the season, allowing six earned runs on eight hits and two walks in 3⅔ innings.
