Fans of Jason Statham in Snatch (2000) and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen (2019) cannot miss this British gangster action comedy, a bullet-riddled run from a London crime boss that ends in a Greek villa and a whole lot of trouble.
Two low-level crooks, Ant and Dick, pull a scam on a vicious London mob, and it goes wrong almost immediately. The man they have crossed is Emery, a ruthless crime lord with the muscle to make them pay, and the pair are in way over their heads. With the violent repercussions closing in, they bolt for rural Greece, where Ant's girlfriend Thea has a villa near Athens. Getting out of London was the easy part. Staying out of reach is another story, because in this world escape isn't that simple.
Back in London, Emery's gang is riven by power struggles, and a sharp, ambitious member of the crew named Scarlett, played by Rina Lipa, has her own agenda. That tension feeds the duo's only real hope of a way out. The film keeps its tone loose and its pace quick: shootouts, beatings and double-crosses on one side, the clumsy attempts of two hustlers to blend into Greek village life on the other.
Tony Cook, who also produced, plays Ant, and critics have likened him to the classic hard-man archetype of British crime cinema. Jonny Weldon plays his long-suffering partner Dick, and Tomi May is the menacing Emery. Rina Lipa, the sister of Dua Lipa, makes her film debut. The movie is the first feature directed by Zak Fenning, an award-winning cinematographer, from a script by Roy Rivett, and runs roughly 93 minutes.
Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels (1998) marked the screen debut of Jason Statham, and the style it helped define still sets the template for British crime action: hard men, money owed to the wrong people and plans that fall apart in the first act. This film plays inside that template. There is the scam, the debt, the chase and the reckoning, with a dose of black comedy as a safety valve whenever the pressure gets too high.
The film borrows openly from the tradition of Get Carter (1971), The Long Good Friday (1980) and Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels (1998): tough talk, loyalty tested by money, and men who think they are cleverer than they are. For anyone who likes gangster movies, revenge, scams and crime-boss showdowns with a streak of black comedy, this one moves fast and rarely lets up.
