Former University of North Texas basketball player Kedrick Hogans has died, officials from the athletic program confirmed on Tuesday.

Hogans, 37, was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and spent five years with the program, playing four seasons from 2007-12. According to a university spokesperson, former North Texas and Texas Southern head coach Johnny Jones spoke with the family to confirm the details. Jones, now an assistant coach at LSU, coached Hogans during his entire time with the program.

Details of Hogans death have yet to be confirmed by the university, as the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office has yet

The 6-foot-7 forward was a key rotational player for Jones and a Mean Green basketball program on the rise as a Sun Belt Conference powerhouse. Hogans missed the entire 2009-10 season after surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, but when healthy, he was a go-to player for Jones.

Hogans was a three-year starter at North Texas, primarily serving as a top defender and slasher during his collegiate career. Hogans, who routinely guarded bigger players, is considered one of the best shot blockers in program history.

“We use to fight all the time…but we always knew we had each others back,” former North Texas teammate Alonzo Edwards said on social media. “Much love fam. This one hurts…. You will be missed!”

Hogans was also part of a historic Edna Karr High School program in New Orleans, where he played a pivotal role in leading the basketball team to a state championship run and earned Louisiana All-State honors.
