Netflix’s 10/10 Crime Thriller Officially Wraps Filming on a Bigger Season 2

Netflix has been pulling some of its biggest crime thrillers straight from the pages lately. 2026 alone has seen the introduction of Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole and the twisty Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal team-up, His & Hers, based on the novel by Alice Feeney, to rave reviews and global success. Gabriel Basso also returned as Peter Sutherland for the penultimate season of The Night Agent at the start of the year, with Season 4 wrapping filming back in September. Now, the streamer just got one step closer to reopening its department of misfit detectives.

Filming officially wrapped on Season 2 of Dept. Q as of October 24, meaning it’s almost time for Matthew Goode‘s troubled Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck to get back on the case. The series, based on Jussi Adler-Olsen‘s long-running series of novels, moved quickly to return after breaking out as a massive success last year, ending with a production schedule a bit faster than initially anticipated. It’ll enter its Sophomore outing coming off a debut that has racked up over 27 million views to this point and spent six weeks in Netflix’s global top ten. Series helmers Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani will be going much further and larger than the moody streets of Edinburgh for their next story, too.

While the first season adapted Mercy and introduced DCI Morck and the titular department tucked away in the police department’s basement as they crack their first cold case, Season 2 will take on Disgrace, Adler-Olsen’s second novel. It will take Morck into the world of the Scottish elite, with Frank previously stating it would focus on “rich and powerful people who believe they are above the law.” Assuming the series sticks close to the novel, the investigation will begin curiously with the closed case of a young brother and sister murdered 20 years ago. The killer was found to be a student at a boarding school who confessed to the crime, but the file wouldn’t be on Mock’s desk if it were solved, would it? He’s left to question who put it there, what they know that throws the verdict into doubt, and why they’ve come to Department Q now.

Britain makes more detective television than any country has any
business making, and somehow almost all of it is good. Here is the one you belong in, what it says
about you, and the case for it being the best of the four.

You want the tea, the gossip and the vicar behaving oddly.
Midsomer is a county where the scenery is beautiful, the fete is on Saturday and the murder
rate is roughly that of a small war, and absolutely nobody involved thinks this is strange.

  • You are sociable, curious and the first to notice that somebody has changed their
    routine.
  • It has been running since 1997 and sells to well over two hundred territories worldwide.
  • John Nettles handed over to Neil Dudgeon in 2011 and the show did not miss a step.
  • Your flaw is that the line between caring about people and enjoying the gossip is
    thinner than you admit.

You feel other people’s grief as if it were handed to you
personally. Broadchurch is less a whodunnit than a study of what a small town does to itself
when it finds out that the answer was always going to be somebody everybody already knew.

  • You are the one people tell the truth to, and you carry all of it afterwards.
  • Olivia Colman won the BAFTA for Best Actress for the first series and David Tennant has
    never been better.
  • Chris Chibnall wrote it before taking over Doctor Who, and took Jodie Whittaker with
    him.
  • Your risk is absorbing so much of other people’s pain that nobody notices yours.

You go through things rather than around them. John Luther is the
best detective in London and a liability to everybody who works with him, and the show is
completely honest that those two facts are the same fact.

  • You are the one people call when the normal approach has already failed.
  • Idris Elba won a Golden Globe for it in 2012 and it made him a film star more or less
    overnight.
  • Luther: The Fallen Sun arrived on Netflix in 2023 and took the character properly
    cinematic.
  • Your weakness is that doing the right thing your way still leaves a mess for somebody
    else.

You say the thing and you do not dress it up. Vera Stanhope turns
up in a hat and a mac, is rude to almost everybody, and is the only person in the room
prepared to ask the question that the family has been waiting years for somebody to ask.

  • You have no patience for performance, and the people who like you really like you.
  • Brenda Blethyn played her for fourteen series before stepping away, and ITV ended the
    show rather than recast.
  • Ann Cleeves wrote the novels, and also wrote the books behind Shetland, which is the
same trick in a colder place.
  • Your flaw is that blunt and kind can be the same thing, but only if people already know
    you.

Goode will be reunited with much of his old team for Dept. Q Season 2, including Alexej Manvelov, Leah Byrne, Jamie Sives, Mark Bonnar, Kate Dickie, Aaron McVeigh, and Sanjeev Kohli. They’ll be joined by a massively expanded cast headlined by Speak No Evil‘s Aisling Franciosi as Kimmie and former The Late Late Show host James Corden as Dr. Ben Smith, alongside Greg Wise, Nicholas Rowe, Tony Curran, Hamish Clark, Alex Ferns, Ross Anderson, Rebecca Root, and more. Missing, however, will be Kelly Macdonald as Carl’s therapist, but otherwise, it’s a jam-packed season of stars. The biggest addition may be on the filming side, as Dept. Q ventured beyond Edinburgh to shoot in over 100 locations around Scotland to give rich layers to Carl’s latest investigation.

A release date has not been set for Dept. Q Season 2. Stay tuned here at Collider for more now that production is complete.
