The Diamondbacks made a roster move prior to their game against the Nationals on Sunday, June 7, reinstating right-handed reliever Taylor Clarke from the family medical emergency list.
Left-handed reliever Philip Abner was optioned to Triple-A Reno to make room for Clarke’s return.
Clarke had been working out at Salt River Fields over the past couple of days to stay sharp. He has not been scored upon in his past 15 games entering June 7.
Infielder Ildemaro Vargas was out of the lineup again, still recovering from injuries sustained in a collision at first base with the Dodgers’ Max Muncy on June 4.
Vargas has come into one game since being hurt, as a late-inning pinch hitter and defensive replacement.
LuJames Groover got another start at first base, though he has a scrape on his lower leg from being stepped on by Nasim Nuñez of the Nationals on a close play at the bag on June 6.
“Luckily for me, nothing really too crazy,” Groover said after Saturday’s game. “He got me but nah, he didn’t get me good enough where I need to be worried. … It happens. He got me good enough to where he got some skin a little bit, but nothing deep at all.”

Diamondbacks RHP Michael Soroka (7-3, 3.49) vs. Nationals RHP Cade Cavalli (3-3, 3.62).
At Chase Field: Soroka allowed four runs in the first two innings against the Dodgers on Tuesday night, June 2, but managed to get through six innings without any further damage. It was the fifth time in the past six starts he managed to pitch at least six innings. … Soroka pitched for the Nationals last season before getting traded in July to the Chicago Cubs. He has not pitched against the Nationals since 2019. … Soroka’s curveball remains his best offering. It elicits a whiff rate of 33.9 percent while holding opposing hitters to a .202 average. … Cavalli gave up two runs in five innings against the Marlins in his most recent start, the 10th time in 13 starts this year in which he has allowed two or fewer earned runs. … Cavalli, however, has struggled in some respects. He has allowed 9.5 hits per nine innings, the second-highest mark in the league behind Diamondbacks RHP Zac Gallen, and he leads the majors with 10 hit batters. … He has never faced the Diamondbacks.
