Michigan survived Week 1, but the fallout around Bryce Underwood has not let up. Former NFL tight end George Wrighster used his show to argue that the Wolverines have let their quarterback down twice over, first on the field and now in front of a microphone.
The flashpoint came at Underwood’s midweek press conference, where the sophomore was asked about Kyle Whittingham‘s comments on his job security and appeared to have no idea they existed. “There was comments about that? That’s cool. I didn’t see that,” Underwood said. Whittingham had told reporters on Monday that Underwood remains the starter but that the arrangement is “not something that’s infinite,” emphasizing that no spot on the roster is set in concrete.
Wrighster called the sequence an avoidable failure by the program. “How does Michigan put its starting quarterback at a podium without preparing him for the single most obvious question that he’s going to get? That is a media relations failure,” he said. “Somebody should have said, hey, coach got asked about your job on Monday. Here’s exactly what he said. Here’s how you handle it. That’s not scripting a kid. That’s preparing him.”

The second failure, in Wrighster’s telling, traces back further. Whittingham revealed after taking the job that Underwood went through his entire freshman season without a dedicated quarterbacks coach working with him daily, something Wrighster called insane given the circumstances. “You’re starting the number one recruit in America. He’s 18 years old. You got 10 to $12 million potentially tied up into him,” he said. “He’s carrying one of the most famous brands in the sport, and he’s making the mistakes freshmen make. And nobody in that building has the primary job of developing the quarterback.”
Wrighster did not let Underwood off entirely, however, saying the laissez faire tone of the press conference did not come off well. Underwood’s opener against Western Michigan fueled the scrutiny, as he completed 54.5 percent of his passes for 170 yards with a touchdown and an interception while turning the ball over twice, both leading to Broncos points, in a 13-12 win decided by a Hail Mary.
Whittingham has since brought in Jason Beck as offensive coordinator and Koy Detmer Jr. to coach quarterbacks, addressing the development gap directly. Underwood now faces No. 11 Oklahoma at the Big House with both his play and his poise under a much brighter light.
