The New York Mets are a club that’s trending towards being trade deadline sellers later this summer by August 3. While they’re still in the hunt right now, things could get a lot worse over the next month, and a fire sale might be the best course of action.

In such a scenario, trading Freddy Peralta, even though they’ve had him for just half a season after a big trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, might be on the table.

However, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report proposed a trade idea involving Peralta that would absolutely infuriate Mets fans for a simple reason: this idea would send him back to the Milwaukee Brewers for a much smaller package than they gave up months ago.

Freddy Peralta trade idea would infuriate Mets fans

“The Trade: New York Mets send RHP Freddy Peralta to the Milwaukee Brewers for OF Luis Lara and RHP Craig Yoho,” Miller writes. “… That would have Mets fans screaming for David Stearns’ head like never before.”

This trade idea from Miller would be a total disaster for the Mets. Not only would it be frustrating to trade Peralta back to the Brewers, a team that could actually use Peralta this season, but the return would be incredibly lackluster.

Over the offseason, the Mets sent Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams to Milwaukee to acquire Peralta. It was a lot for a one-year rental, but if the Mets were to be serious contenders, they needed someone like Peralta.

But now, with things falling apart, trading Peralta is very much on the table. This return, however, would be incredibly lackluster for the Mets.

Luis Lara and Craig Yoho aren’t terrible prospects or anything, but compared to Williams and Sproat, what the Mets gave up only a few months ago, this would be an incredibly lackluster package.

Such a trade would have Mets fans, justifiably, frustrated with David Stearns and the franchise. If there were ever a single move admitting a season was a failure, this trade idea from Miller would be just that for the 2026 Mets.

Hopefully, for Stearns and Mets’ fans’ sake, if Peralta is traded, it’s to a different club and for a better return. They likely won’t get the equivalent of the package they sent over the offseason, but it could still be better than this idea from Miller.
