McNish Warns Monza Will Be “Difficult” for Audi Amid Midfield Upgrade War

The Audi Revolut F1 Team is bracing for a harsh reality check at the upcoming Italian Grand Prix. While midfield rivals like Alpine, Aston Martin, and Williams aggressively deploy new aerodynamic upgrade packages to fight for the final points-paying positions, Audi Racing Director Allan McNish admits that his squad is already shifting its primary focus toward future development.

Speaking to the media after banking a hard-fought result at the Dutch Grand Prix, McNish delivered a blunt assessment of Audi’s current standing, warning that Monza’s high-speed layout will likely expose the team’s underlying pace deficit.

The Midfield Upgrade War

As the 2026 season enters its crucial second half, the midfield development race has intensified. Aston Martin recently showcased surprising one-stop pace with Fernando Alonso, while Pierre Gasly proved that Alpine’s latest upgrades have given them a distinct edge in race trim. McNish acknowledged that with the top four teams holding an insurmountable advantage, the rest of the grid is locked in a brutal dogfight for just one or two available points at the tail end of the top ten.

“Yeah, so, you’re right. You know, Aston have come, and Alonso’s pace doing a one-stop was actually quite surprising at the end,” McNish observed. “At the same time, Alpine definitely [has] Gasly in the fight… in the race pace, they seem to be a bit better. I think there’s no question that’s going to be a very hard fight.”

While rivals bolt on new carbon fiber, Audi has opted for a much quieter development path. McNish confirmed that the team is still relying heavily on their baseline car, having introduced only minor details rather than significant aero packages since the Austrian Grand Prix. Instead of throwing resources at a desperate late-season midfield scrap, the Hinwil-based squad is looking at the bigger picture.

“We will have to keep on moving ahead with the car. However, in practice, the reality is I would say the majority of the focus for now, I would think everybody is more on to future years than necessarily the end of this particular battle,” McNish revealed.

Monza Challenge for Audi and Capitalizing on Chaos

As development shifts toward future campaigns, Audi is preparing for tracks that inherently punish its current technical package. Monza, famously known as the “Temple of Speed,” requires ultra-low downforce setups and supreme power unit deployment. McNish was transparent about the fact that Audi’s current chassis struggles on high-speed, pure-pace circuits.

“I think Monza is the next race coming up, that could be one of the more difficult ones for us, in the same way that Silverstone and Spa, especially Spa, from a pure pace point of view, was a little bit tougher,” McNish admitted. “But Monza is quite a unique track anyway.”

Because Audi expects to lack the raw aerodynamic and engine speed to fight for points purely on merit in Italy, McNish is demanding absolute operational perfection from his pit wall. The 56-year-old Scot stressed that the team must be positioned to capitalize on external factors.

“And so, therefore, I think we’ve got to be, I would say quite understanding that, you know, it’s not going to be this discussion every single race,” McNish explained. “And we’ve got to also, as a team, you know, be able to deal with that, which is comes back to the point of making sure that we do whatever we do correctly so that if an opportunity does come, then we can take advantage of a virtual safety car or safety car, whatever it may be.”

While happy to have secured points at Zandvoort, McNish knows the upcoming weekend will require immense patience. “I go away from here happy that we’ve got points on the board when we could take them, but with the knowledge that there’s races coming up where we won’t be in the points,” he concluded.
