Arsenal planning to make 60 staff redundant despite record revenue and Premier League success

Arsenal plan to make around 60 staff redundant despite winning a Premier League title and having a successful financial year.

The North London club is facing serious criticism over the proposed cuts.

According to The Athletic, employees were informed on Wednesday that positions across several departments could be axed following a review.

The review was conducted by management consultants Boston Consulting Group.

The process is part of efforts to streamline operations, improve efficiency and free up funds, although no final decision has been made as the club continues its consultation process.

The proposed redundancies have raised questions about Arsenal’s financial priorities, particularly given their impressive revenue and success under manager Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners recorded revenue of £691 million in their 2024/25 accounts, while last season’s achievements are expected to generate more income.

However, Arsenal did not make a profit during that period, as player and staff bonuses and other expenses offset additional earnings.

The timing of the planned cuts has also attracted attention following Arteta’s new contract, which reportedly makes him the Premier League’s highest-paid manager.

Although rewarding the Spaniard after his success is understandable, critics question why a club that can commit substantial sums to its playing squad cannot protect dozens of jobs.

Arsenal have also invested heavily in strengthening their squad to provide more depth and competition for places.

That spending has prompted debate about whether the club could save money elsewhere before making staff redundant.

This has been a common trend across English football, with Manchester United already reducing their workforce and Everton also proposing staff cuts.

Clubs are citing efficiency and financial sustainability when restructuring their operations, but the consequences often fall on employees who have little influence over major spending decisions.

Arsenal have been promoting their community work and connection with supporters, making the prospect of dozens of redundancies particularly uncomfortable.

For now, the club is in the consultation process and can still reconsider its plans.
