Max Verstappen Reaches Breaking Point Over Dangerous Red Bull Defect: “I Feel Like Going Home”

The 2026 season has been an unmitigated disaster for Red Bull Racing, but the British Grand Prix may have officially pushed Max Verstappen to his breaking point.

After suffering a premature DNF just six laps into the race at Silverstone, the reigning multi-time world champion did not hold back in his post-race media duties. While speaking with SkySports F1, Verstappen delivered a brutally honest assessment of his machinery, citing not only a severe lack of pace but a terrifying mechanical flaw that actively put him in danger.

Here is why the former championship juggernaut is completely fed up.

Silverstone is one of the fastest, most aerodynamically demanding circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. Relying on massive downforce to navigate corners like Copse and Maggotts, a fully functioning rear wing is non-negotiable for driver safety.

But according to Verstappen, his Red Bull was actively failing to re-engage its downforce after the Drag Reduction System (DRS) was deployed.

“The rear wing doesn’t close fully,” Verstappen revealed when discussing his terrifying on-track accident. “Once is okay, but twice is already something dangerous”.

Driving a Formula 1 car into a high-speed braking zone with the rear wing stuck open is essentially a death wish. The fact that this mechanical failure happened multiple times during the weekend highlights a severe quality control issue within the Red Bull garage, and Verstappen’s frustration is entirely justified.

Even when the rear wing was functioning, the car simply did not have the raw pace to compete with the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren.

Currently languishing in seventh place in the Drivers’ Championship, Verstappen’s comments reflect the reality of a car that is fundamentally flawed in both straight-line speed and tire management.

“It’s painful and frustrating. You try everything you can,” Verstappen lamented. “I haven’t been happy with the car. It’s lacking top speed, and with the hards we’re very slow. I haven’t enjoyed it at all”.

The numbers back up his misery. Red Bull has plummeted to fourth in the Constructors’ standings, a staggering 205 points behind the dominant Mercedes squad. The aerodynamic dominance that defined the team just a few years ago has completely evaporated.

Perhaps the most alarming takeaway from the weekend isn’t the broken rear wing or the slow hard tires—it is Verstappen’s mental state. Formula 1’s most fiercely competitive driver sounds completely exhausted by the ongoing engineering failures.

“I feel like going home and not thinking about Formula 1,” he stated bluntly.

For a driver who notoriously spends his free time racing on simulators, admitting that he wants to completely disconnect from the sport is a massive red flag. If Red Bull cannot figure out how to build a safe, competitive car under the current regulations, they risk entirely alienating their star driver.
