Matt LaFleur reveals Green Bay Packers may have finally found offensive line answer

The Green Bay Packers used their fourth different offensive line combination in four weeks during their Week 4 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The unit had its share of issues, but the latest configuration could be the closest indication yet of the group Green Bay plans to rely on moving forward.

Laken Tomlinson and Travis Glover got the starting nods at left guard and right guard, respectively, giving Green Bay its most promising combination at the two interior spots so far. Tomlinson in particular appears to have a chance to secure the left guard job for the remainder of the season.

After reviewing the game film, head coach Matt LaFleur came away encouraged by what he saw from the two new starters.

“I thought they did great. I know they each had a penalty. I know Tomlinson had two. But I thought, all in all, that was the best we’ve played together for one game,” remarked the Packers head coach.

The Packers have now gone through four different players at left guard in the first four weeks, with Tomlinson becoming the latest to take over the position. Glover, meanwhile, is the second player Green Bay has used at right guard this season.

“It wasn’t perfect all the time, but the thing that I liked, too, was I saw the guys straining up front; there was some physicality that we needed to see, and so I thought they did a good job against a pretty good front.”

Tomlinson did not exactly light up the grading scale, finishing with a 59.4 overall mark from PFF. His 69.1 grade as a run blocker was more encouraging, however, and the overall number was still enough to make him Green Bay’s highest graded left guard through four weeks. Aaron Banks recorded a 55.0 grade on 22 snaps, while Jager Burton posted a 25.6 mark across 89 snaps and Donovan Jennings finished with a 39.5 grade on 82 snaps. Given those numbers, Tomlinson represents a meaningful upgrade at the position.

Four spots along the Packers’ offensive line now appear to be settled. Anthony Belton has taken over at right tackle, while Sean Rhyan and Jordan Morgan remain firmly established at center and left tackle, respectively. With Tomlinson now taking control of left guard, Green Bay’s final task is finding a reliable option at right guard.
