Olympique de Marseille’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (31) has reportedly turned down the proposal from Newcastle United, according to information from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Whilst it seemed as though a deal was on the verge of being finalised between the two clubs – with the Magpies having agreed to meet OM’s financial demands of around €15m – the Danish player is said to have vetoed the transfer.

The situation is obviously a tricky one for the Marseille board, who were counting on the transfer to boost their coffers and balance their books, given the very tight economic climate.

Under contract until 2028, Højbjerg could therefore continue his spell at the Canebière, which began in 2024 when he joined from Tottenham Hotspur.

Having quickly established himself as a key figure in the Marseille squad, the midfielder made 32 appearances (all as a starter) in his first season, and in his second he racked up 43 more, starting 40 of them.
