Switzerland marched into the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a composed 2-0 victory over Algeria at BC Place in Vancouver, goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye doing the damage on either side of half-time.
Murat Yakin’s side arrived in the knockouts having topped Group B unbeaten, posting wins over Bosnia and Herzegovina and co-hosts Canada before a late draw against Qatar.
Algeria, meanwhile, had squeezed through as third-place finishers in Group J following a dramatic group stage that included a Lionel Messi hat-trick against them and a last-gasp equaliser against Austria that sent both sides through.
The Desert Foxes started encouragingly, with Houssem Aouar threatening early on, but Switzerland gradually tightened their grip.
The opener arrived on 10 minutes when Johan Manzambi carved through the Algerian defence on a brilliant solo run, allowing Embolo to convert from close range.
Algeria pushed for an equaliser but were undone by their own defensive lapses at the start of the second period — failing to clear their lines on two consecutive occasions — and Ndoye punished them instantly, collecting outside the area and threading a composed low finish past goalkeeper Luca Zidane into the far corner.
Algeria’s misfortune continued as Riyad Mahrez, their most dangerous creative threat, was withdrawn in the 71st minute without making a decisive impact.
Switzerland, despite never truly moving out of a controlled register, were rarely troubled thereafter and saw out a clean sheet with authority. They advance to face the Round of 16 firmly in their stride.
