Well, that wasn’t very fun. In a game that felt like a must-win, or, at least, a ‘must-compete’, Michigan State football went to Madison and got absolutely crushed by Wisconsin on Saturday, 31 to 3, in what was quite easily the worst game of the season for the Spartans.
Below, we put together our top three takeaways from the loss.
If this game was at least reasonably close, I’d probably say, try to keep coaching up the starters and see if you can eke out a .500 season. With a 31 to 3 loss to the Badgers, I think that ship has sailed and it’s time to let some younger players get some reps and put some play on tape.
Not exactly the best silver lining here, but it’s still notable that MSU only had one penalty for five yards in this game and only gave up two sacks. That is a sign that Pat Fitzgerald still has the locker room and is establishing his culture. Once the talent is there to meet that culture, we could see a nice era dawn at Michigan State.
Without a doubt, the offense has clearly been the worst part of this team this year, but it’s not like they are completely inept. The issue this year has largely been the ability to finish drives. Alessio Milivojevic led six drives into Badgers’ territory, but the Spartans just couldn’t finish. It didn’t help that they went 1-for-6 on fourth down.
