London City ‘building something special’ after going second in WSL

Alexia Putellas says London City Lionesses want to “build something special” after a 2-0 win over Brighton moved them up to second in the Women’s Super League.

Putellas scored her first league goal since joining the Lionesses to help them to the victory that sees them move within three points of leaders Manchester City.

London City dominated throughout and got their reward for their bright start in the 29th minute, with Putellas picking out the bottom corner from the edge of the area after some sloppy Brighton defending.

The Seagulls almost equalised shortly after, with Emily Murphy’s looping header hitting the crossbar, and Kiko Seike could only fire wide on the rebound.

Freya Godfrey also hit the woodwork for London City in the second half, but Lucia Corrales made sure of all three points in the 92nd minute by turning in Delphine Cascarino’s cross following a counter-attack.

Putellas has been vocal about her hopes of big achievements with London City this season, and she is thrilled to be off the mark for her new club.

“I’m so happy, I’m so proud. The most important thing is we got three points here,” she told Sky Sports.

“We are trying to be unpredictable. We can score through possession and counter-attacks; we can do both. I think we achieved that.

“It’s a new challenge for everyone; we want to build something special here, and we have to keep pushing and showing up for each other. We want to give our best this season.

“It’s the beginning; we just have begun. There’s a lot of points yet. We have to improve the same details; we’ll be there [around the top of the table] for sure.”

London City only just edged the shot count (11 to 10) but had three shots on target compared to Brighton’s one.

The visitors also accumulated a higher expected goals total, racking up 1.6 xG, while the Lionesses accumulated 1.3.

London City could drop back down the table by the end of the weekend, with five WSL matches being played on Sunday, but head coach Eder Maestre is confident they can continue to cause problems for the top teams.

“We have the underdog mentality; we’re humble but have the target to reach those limits,” she told Sky Sports.

“It’s temporary, but we’re dreaming big, so hopefully we can be in that position later in the competition.”
