Lewis Hamilton Makes Honest Ferrari Win Admission After Austrian GP Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton admitted a lack of Ferrariperformance when asked whether the team could challenge for victory at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix. Starting third on the grid at the Red Bull Ring, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc, he didn’t dress it up.

“In pure pace, no,” he said when asked if he could win the race on the Energy Drink-owned circuit. “The Mercedes has been very quick. But maybe with strategy there is an opportunity.”

That’s about as honest as it gets from a driver who, not long ago, was enduring a winless first Ferrari season without a single podium to show for it. The turnaround in 2026 has been quick for the Briton – Hamilton won in Barcelona, his first victory for the Scuderia – but Saturday’s qualifying at the Red Bull Ring made clear that George Russell and Mercedes still have the upper hand in raw speed. Russell took pole with a 1m06.113s, with Leclerc just 0.059 seconds ahead of Hamilton in second.

Hamilton’s Goal for Sunday Is Already Mapped Out

With the pace gap acknowledged, Hamilton’s race strategy shifts toward damage limitation. “I think winning is a tall order so we have to maximise points for the team and try to keep one of the Mercedes behind if we can. If we can have both of them behind, that will be mega.”

Kimi Antonelli – who leads the Drivers‘ Championship by 41 points over Hamilton heading into Round 11 – starts fourth, directly behind the Ferrari pair. That makes Sunday’s opening lap a chess match, with Hamilton needing to hold position while keeping the championship leader bottled up behind him.

The qualifying performance itself was a meaningful step forward for Ferrari, who arrived in Austria with a lot of changes to their car.

“We have done a great job this weekend. We were quite far off yesterday and didn’t quite understand why but made changes and closed the gap.

“Unfortunately my first run in Q3 wasn’t spot-on, so I had a lot to recover. But it’s great to be up there. Hopefully we are in the fight.

“The team have worked really hard back at the factory to bring us a new floor this weekend.”
