Last Word on Football brings you the latest Sunderland transfer rumours, with the Black Cats linked to no fewer than five players today. The most surprising is a move for England international winger Jack Grealish.

Three players have been added to Regis Le Bris’ squad so far, but they are hoping to strengthen further ahead of a season that will see the Black Cats compete in Europe for the first time since 1973.

We take a look at the potential Grealish deal and the four other players that Sunderland have reportedly declared an interest in

Jack Grealish

According to David Ornstein, Sunderland have made a bid to sign Manchester City and England winger Jack Grealish. The deal, should it go through, would be an initial one-year loan with an option to make it permanent at the end of the season. It is also thought that City would contribute to the 30-year-old’s salary should he agree to move to the Stadium of Light.

Five years ago, it took a then British transfer record of £100 million for City to convince Aston Villa to part company with the winger. He would go on to make 159 appearances at the Etihad, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League, and an FA Cup. As competition grew, Grealish went on loan to Everton last season to play regular football, making 22 appearances before injury ended his season.

Geny Catamo

Interest in the Sporting winger has been ongoing for some time now, but according to the Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats have no intention of triggering the release clause in his contract, which is thought to be around £51.5 million. This has caused a standoff, and now a deal looks increasingly unlikely; however, they appear to have found an alternative.

Igor Paixao

That alternative is Marseille winger Igor Paixao. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Sunderland have reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with the player, and Sky Sports are reporting that an offer has been made by the Black Cats to Marseille. However, at present, despite the French side needing to sell players, a deal has yet to be agreed between the two clubs.

The winger, who can play on either flank, joined Marseille from Feyenoord last summer and went on to score 12 goals and provide seven assists. He is valued at around £50 million, but due to Marseille’s financial situation, a deal more to Sunderland’s liking could be possible.

Jake O’Brien

According to The Athletic, Everton are willing to listen to offers for defender Jake O’Brien, with Sunderland reported to be one of the clubs interested. The 6ft 6in 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international is primarily a centre back; however, he can also play at right back, something he did for the Toffees for much of last season.

Should Sunderland follow up their interest, they could be competing against clubs from France, Italy, and England for the player who signed for Everton for £17 million from Lyon in 2024.

Marc Casado

Sunderland are reportedly one of several clubs interested in Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado. According to Spanish outlet El Mundo Deportivo, the Spain international is not part of the plans at the Camp Nou, and his departure is only a matter of time. The report claims that Barca will be looking for around 30-40 million euros.

The 22-year-old has made 75 senior appearances for the La Liga side after progressing through their youth ranks; however, it appears he has played his last game for the Spanish giants.
