The Lagos State University (LASU), in collaboration with the National Universities Commission (NUC), has organised a three-day TETFund-funded capacity-building programme to equip its academic staff with innovative approaches to teaching entrepreneurship.
The training, held from July 27 to 29 at the Senate Chamber of the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, Main Campus, Ojo, focused on the effectuation approach to entrepreneurship education, bringing together members of the university’s academic community to enhance teaching and learning.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Taiwo Afisi, described the programme as a timely intervention aimed at strengthening entrepreneurship education in Nigerian universities.
He said entrepreneurship extends beyond business creation, noting that the effectuation approach equips lecturers with practical methods to help students think creatively, solve problems, make informed decisions under uncertainty and identify opportunities.
Afisi expressed confidence that the training would improve teaching methods and better prepare graduates to create value, generate employment and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The programme featured sessions facilitated by Dr. Abubakar A. Adamu of the University of Maiduguri and Dr. Bola Olufunke Jenyo of the Federal University of Health Sciences, who exposed participants to the principles of effectuation, including the Bird-in-Hand, Affordable Loss, Lemonade, Patchwork Quilt and Pilot-in-the-Plane principles.
Participants also took part in practical exercises, case studies, quizzes and interactive discussions designed to deepen their understanding of entrepreneurship teaching and encourage the application of the concepts in the classroom.
At the close of the programme, Dr. Adamu urged participants to embrace the entrepreneurial principles in both their teaching and professional lives, stressing that entrepreneurship education should remain practical and action-oriented.
Representing the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Dr. Samuel Asesanya commended participants for their commitment throughout the training and expressed optimism that the programme would further strengthen entrepreneurship education at LASU.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Professor Uche Ebele of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) appreciated TETFund, the National Universities Commission and LASU for organising the training, saying the knowledge acquired would enhance entrepreneurship teaching and practice across the institution.
