Klay Thompson is one of the best basketball players in the NBA, who has often been considered as an all-time great. He has won the championship four times, and has been included in the NBA All-Star team five times.
Thompson is currently playing for the Dallas Mavericks and is no longer at his best level. However, it looks like he is lining himself up for another move in the upcoming season.
Klay Thompson’s message teases move to the Los Angeles Lakers
Thompson shared an Instagram story on August 10, 2026, where he responded to a fan-created NBA 2K simulation video that depicted him in a Los Angeles Lakers uniform alongside Showtime-era players including Magic Johnson, James Worthy, A.C. Green, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. In the clip, the simulated Thompson averaged 23.1 points per game on a 61-21 Lakers team that won the championship.
Thompson captioned the viral video with a message that said, “This is what my dreams look like on a consistent basis”. While he did not directly state his intention to join the Lakers, many think that it was a subtle hint of his desire.
The former Golden State Warriors star is already on the final year of his three-year, $50 million deal signed in 2024 with the Mavericks. The franchise has explored the trade market for the 36-year-old, but failed to reach a deal. Previous reports have said that Thompson wishes to return to Los Angeles, where he grew up and still owns a home. As of now, both the Lakers and the Miami Heat are said to be interested in him.
Thompson’s message also comes at a time when his own father is pushing for his move to the Lakers.
Klay Thompson’s father pushes for move to the Lakers
Thompson’s father Mychal Thompson is a Lakers legend, having won two championships with them, and currently working as their radio broadcaster. He recently replied with, “I’m TRYING” after a fan asked him on social media to “get back on it”, regarding the Lakers interest in his son.
Afterwards, another fan wrote, “now that LeBron is not a Laker, you can tell Klay he can join the Lakers franchise as an LA kid”, to which he replied with, “Ahhhh thank u my frend… It wud be a Dream come true.”
Dallas does not wish to let the player go through a buyout, and prefers to have a trade as they rebuild the roster around rookie Cooper Flagg.
It remains to be seen whether Klay Thompson will end up at the Los Angeles Lakers.
