Kawhi Leonard’s NBA future hangs in the balance, and the latest update on the Aspiration scandal investigation is not quite positive.
One of the biggest announcements of the offseason was Kawhi Leonard being traded to the Toronto Raptors, where he won his second NBA championship.
However, quite soon after the deal was announced, the Los Angeles Clippers and the Raptors announced that the deal would be on hold until the investigation into the Aspiration scandal was concluded.
The Clippers are suspected of circumventing the league’s salary cap to pay Leonard. And while they have denied it, the investigation still continues. And it seems like it might not be resolved anytime soon.
NBA investigation into Clippers and Kawhi Leonard could extend to 2027
If Toronto was hoping that the situation would get resolved quickly, it seems they will be disappointed. The latest reports suggest that the matter is now expected to carry on into 2027.
“The NBA investigation into whether the LA Clippers circumvented the salary cap to pay Kawhi Leonard could drag into 2027,” wrote Baxter Holmes for ESPN.
“(This is) if the parties don’t agree on the findings or any proposed settlement that involves punishing the team, sources with knowledge of the case told ESPN on Wednesday.”
The silver lining here is that both parties could settle the matter by simply agreeing to a reasonable outcome. However, the NBPA is reportedly ready to take the matter into arbitration if the league investigation is found to lack substantial evidence. It seems anything but straightforward.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is committed to ensuring a fair investigation
The longer this saga drags on, the worse a look it is for the league. A conclusion is necessary, but it cannot come at the expense of a comprehensive look into the case.
Commissioner Adam Silver spoke about this earlier in July, giving his view of the situation.
“On one hand, we want to respect everyone’s rights here,” Silver said. “Certainly, if any of us were being investigated, we would want a certain standard to be met, a standard of due process with presumption of innocence, etc.
“And at the same time, we want to be able to answer to our teams and our fans and to all of you that this is comprehensive and that to the best of our ability, we’ve discerned what actually happened in this situation.”
Raptors fans excited about Leonard’s return are the ones suffering the most in this situation. They might have to wait a really long time to see their hero make his return to the team.
