Brewers’ World Series win thrusts ‘team of destiny’ into national spotlight

The Milwaukee Brewers‘ first World Series title has put the team in the national spotlight, with media outlets across the country reacting after one of baseball’s small-market teams claimed the sport’s biggest prize.

With a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5, the Brewers secured the franchise’s first-ever championship, ending a decades-long wait for fans in the team’s first World Series appearance in 44 years.

Here’s how the Brewers’ victory is being described by some national news organizations.

The Athletic (The New York Times)

Andy McCullough, a senior writer for The Athletic, wrote:

“On television, over the radio and in person, this team’s fans watched the Brewers recover from a gut punch in Game 4, when they squandered a one-run lead in the 12th inning, to put together a complete victory that resembled so many others from this glorious summer and fall.”

McCullough continued:

“This championship represents triumph for an organization that sets the standard for small-town success. No team plays in a smaller market than Milwaukee. Owner Mark Attanasio favors sustainability over all-in pursuits; the team does not vie for top-shelf free agents. President of baseball operations Matt Arnold’s front office compensates through shrewd trades, eagle-eyed scouting and rigorous player development.”

ESPN

Bradford Doolittle, MLB writer and ESPN analyst, wrote:

“Now the Brewers are the standard, for reasons both tangible and intangible. Milwaukee didn’t survive the playoff road as much as it repaved it. The Brewers won a franchise record 103 games during the season, then followed that up with a dominant 11-2 postseason. Going back to September, the Brewers closed out their season on a 26-5 heater.”

Doolittle continued:

“That’s the way to land a title 58 years in the making. The Brewers did not pry open the championship door. To paraphrase legendary football coach Bum Phillips, they kicked the damn thing in.”

Yahoo! Sports

“Nobody will look back on the 2026 Brewers and wonder why they won it all. They finished the regular season with the most wins, beat a lava-hot Padres team in the NLDS, swept the two-time defending champion Dodgers in the NLCS and then clobbered the American League’s best club in a five-game Fall Classic beatdown.

“Their performance in a comparatively boring and straightforward Game 5 clincher perfectly exemplified that dynamic.”

Bleacher Report

Joel Reuter, a MLB columnist for Bleacher Report, wrote:

“In an era defined by the haves and have-nots in payroll flexibility, and with the free-spending Los Angeles Dodgers winning back-to-back titles, the Brewers have shown there’s another way.”

Reuter continued:

“The Brewers have built something that can endure a shifting MLB landscape, and they’ve done it using tools that are readily available to all 30 MLB franchises – a cohesive philosophy, a dedication to player development and a pipeline of homegrown talent.”

CBS Sports

Matt Snyder, a CBS Sports writer, wrote:

“The Brewers are such a well-rounded bunch and the front office thrives on winning on the margins, which is why some might slap inappropriate labels on them, such as the little engine that could. That doesn’t begin to cover it. They are, in fact, a team of destiny getting contributions from all over the place.”

FOX Sports

Deesha Thosar, a MLB writer, wrote:

“A team that has always been defined by grit, depth, and a refusal to back down proved it not only belonged on baseball’s biggest stage, but it deserved to be remembered forever as one of the greatest teams in history. The Brewers went 11-2 in the postseason after winning 103 games in the regular season. Their October was complete dominance from start to finish.”
