Karl Mecklenburg predicts 'convincing' win for Broncos over Chiefs

There are different ways that NFL coaches approach preseason games.

Some coaching staffs, including the Chiefs, view preseason games as an opportunity for young and new players to show that they can handle an NFL game plan, and hold up physically against NFL size and athleticism. They don’t play their veteran starters in the preseason. The preseason games are for sorting out the back end of the roster. These teams often take a few weeks to get up to full efficiency in the regular season, but they also have fewer preseason injuries for their starters.

Other coaches, including the Broncos, see preseason as a time to get their players up to regular season form. They play starters in the preseason because they know that the noncontact practices of training camp don’t prepare players for the full speed, tackle to the ground action of a regular season game. These coaches generally have better records in the first few games, but the risk of injury to a starter is always present.

If you saw the Forty Niners play the Rams, you saw the effect of these philosophies. The 49ers were in regular season form and dominated the Rams. The Rams don’t play starters in the preseason and the 49ers do.

I expect the Broncos to win in Kansas City on Monday night in a convincing manner, with the Broncos up to regular season form, and the Chiefs a few weeks from it. Broncos 27 – Chiefs 9.
