Growing up around performers, storytelling was always central to Emma’s life. Add in a nerdy older brother who introduced her to Marvel at far too young an age, and her love for entertainment led her to pursue a Journalism degree at Indiana University, where she discovered her passion for entertainment reporting. She spent nearly one year in Los Angeles covering industry stories and fully immersing herself in the world of entertainment media.
Matt Damon’s return as Jason Bourne has received a promising new update, although the long-awaited sequel still faces one major condition.
Damon first played the former CIA assassin in 2002’s The Bourne Identity, returning for The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), and Jason Bourne (2016). The action franchise also expanded with 2012’s The Bourne Legacy, starring MCU Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner as a different operative. A sixth installment has been in development, with Black Doves creator Joe Barton writing the screenplay and All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger attached to direct.
In an interview with Radio Times, Barton revealed that Damon has been reading pages from the Jason Bourne 6 script and is enthusiastic about the latest material. However, his return depends on whether the story justifies another installment. Barton explained:
“But for Matt, I think it’s like, ‘Look, if we can get the script and the story to a place where I can’t say no and feel like it justifies itself coming back’, then he’d be up for doing it, and I feel like we’re definitely getting closer and closer, hopefully.”

Barton also confirmed that the creative team has been sending Damon new script pages, which the actor has responded to enthusiastically. The writer praised Berger’s involvement and emphasized how much the franchise means to Damon, who has portrayed Bourne across four movies spanning more than two decades. Despite the encouraging update, the sequel has not officially been greenlit.
The comments follow Damon’s previous update about the Bourne franchise, in which he expressed interest in another installment. Speaking with Rich Eisen during his press tour for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Damon said that if another Bourne movie moves forward, he wants it to feel like the original trilogy. He also explained that, unlike the James Bond franchise, the Bourne movies follow one continuing story rather than sending their central character on a separate mission with each installment.

The franchise’s interconnected storyline could make developing a sixth movie particularly challenging. As reflected in the Jason Bourne movies in order, the films follow a continuing narrative, with The Bourne Ultimatum and The Bourne Legacy even taking place around the same time. A new installment would need to find another compelling chapter in Bourne’s story without repeating the conflicts of the earlier movies.

Nevertheless, Barton’s latest comments suggest that progress is being made behind the scenes. With Damon reviewing the script and Berger attached to direct, the creative team remains focused on developing a story that the actor approves of. However, Damon’s return has not been confirmed, and Jason Bourne 6 does not currently have a release date.
All five Jason Bourne movies are available to stream on Netflix.
The Bourne Franchise is an action-thriller series conceived by Robert Ludlum in the novel series. Film adaptations began with The Bourne Identity in 2002, with Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, a man who, after regaining his memories, learns that he was a top CIA assassin, with his former employer trying to kill him to tie up loose ends.
