The sea of teal and black at EverBank Stadium had some brown-and-orange- this week as the Cleveland Browns fans arrived for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ highly anticipated home opener.
But for the thousands of fans streaming toward the gates, the real opponent before kickoff wasn’t the visiting team it was the obstacle course of stadium construction.
With sweeping renovations underway at EverBank Stadium, the game-day experience looked different this year. Massive construction projects surrounding the venue have severely impacted parking availability, completely shutting down some traditional lots and causing the remaining spaces to fill up quickly.
To beat the gridlock, eager fans arrived the moment the parking lots opened.
“Construction is all around for the new stadium,” said Jaguars fan Jeremy Khan, navigating the orange barrels outside the venue. “It’s going to be tough to find parking.”
For seasoned tailgaters, the ongoing work required an entirely new strategy. Jay Hercus, a long-time Jaguars fan, emphasized that beating the traffic required precision. “We get down early and set up, and we got a whole routine,” Hercus said as he learned years before to get down there early to beat traffic and also drop his wife off the cheer.
The disruptions are part of a transitional period for the stadium. Due to the multi-phase stadium renovation the Jaguars will only play six true home games in Jacksonville this season. Furthermore, ongoing construction has slashed stadium capacity down to just 42,500 seats.
That limited supply is hitting fans directly in the wallet. With fewer seats available and premium parking scarce, attendees reported a sharp spike in the cost of attending the game. Many drivers found themselves routed away from their usual spots, forced to pay premium rates for alternative lots farther from the stadium.
“We thought we were going to go to the main lot, but plans changed whenever we got here,” said Jaguars fan Lilly Walls, recounting her pre-game scramble. “We had to make a U-turn, a few stops, but then we found out that we came here, parking was more expensive, but now we’re here.”
It wasn’t just the home crowd feeling the pinch. Traveling Browns fan Logan Walnsch noticed the price inflation immediately upon trying to secure tickets and parking. “Browns aren’t exactly a huge draw. We know that,” Walnsch noted. “But it felt a bit more expensive to go into a stadium with 30,000 less seats.”
Despite the headache of gridlock, altered traffic patterns, and lighter wallets, the atmosphere outside the stadium remained electric. For the Jacksonville faithful, a little dust and a long walk aren’t enough to break decades of tradition.
One lifelong Jaguars fan, sporting her game-day gear, dismissed the price hikes with a smile, emphasizing that her loyalty to the team spans more than twenty years. “I was a little surprised when I was like, let’s get more prices,” she said. “But you know what, I’ve been doing this for 20-plus years, and I’ll continue to do it until they wheel me in here in a wheelchair.”
Ultimately, the consensus among the home crowd was clear a stadium under construction is a small price to pay to ensure the stands remain a hostile environment for visitors. As one fan put it while heading toward the gate, they’d always rather deal with the traffic than see the opposing team’s colors take over their home turf.
