It’s Officially The Start Of A New Era For Tulsa King’s Mitch In Season 4

Warning: Mild SPOILERS lie ahead for Tulsa King season 4, episode 1, “W.W.D.D.”!Garrett Hedlund’s Mitch is feeling reinvigorated for a new path in Tulsa King season 4.

Since becoming the right-hand man to Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi, Mitch has steadily become more intermingled with the mob capo’s new operations in Oklahoma, including using his bar as a front and becoming the face of a car dealership bought by Dwight for money laundering. However, he also found himself becoming listless in running the dealership, particularly as season 3 saw the return of former flame Cleo and led to him and Manfredi’s crew getting involved in the distillery business.

Now, coming into Tulsa King season 4, Mitch is getting the chance to shake things up as Dwight, having successfully acquired a federal liquor license, aims to transition into legitimate territory, shuttering the dealership, much to the delight of Hedlund’s character. Given free rein to clear out the inventory of the dealership, Mitch hatches up a scheme to replace every vehicle with junk cars in order to bring in a bigger profit with its closure.

However, in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns ahead of its premiere, Hedlund teases that Mitch’s new era of scheming is only just getting started in Tulsa King season 4. The star began by explaining that his character in the Taylor Sheridan-produced series has “established a guiding light within Dwight,” viewing Stallone’s character as “the father he never had.”

Garrett Hedlund: He went out on the ledge, and he’s tried some things, and either they failed or they just plain didn’t work, and it was kind of back to the drawing boards. He’s tried letting those that tugged at his heartstrings from the past back in, learned a hard lesson from that, as well. So, season 4 is starting out on a clear slate, with a little bit more wisdom, awareness, but never a lack of fearlessness.

ScreenRant: I feel that fearlessness immediately in what he’s doing with the dealership now that Dwight has given him the clear to close the business down, and do with the inventory what he will. He’s got a pretty good plan in mind for how to pull this off. But as we know, these things are never clear-cut, and a lot of power players are coming into Tulsa. So, what can you preview about how Mitch’s little scheme is going to start to unfold?

Garrett Hedlund: I’ll tell you right now, he’s going to cut the dead weight of the dealership, Sayonara, it’s on to the next and the new. They’re on to betting on these horse races. They want to invest in horse races. They find some discoveries on the land, on their property, which becomes very valuable, so it’s trying to evaluate that and how that can benefit them. The government’s trying to take their land, their bar, their casino, their weed shop, everything from them that they’ve built from the ground up. So, we’ve got a lot of fun things in the mix that are on that teeter totter. Terence Winter’s done a wonderful job with the season, coming back in, never a dull [moment] with the chaos he gets us to ensue ourselves in, so there’s a lot in store.

ScreenRant: You mentioned the pulling at the heartstrings. I did love seeing the dynamic between Mitch and Cleo last season, especially because it felt like as beautiful as they were together, they almost brought out the worst in each other as they got caught up in their past. Obviously, in the wake of her dad’s death, she sort of just kind of went her own way. I’m curious if there’s going to be any sort of update on what things might look like between them in Tulsa King season 4?

Garrett Hedlund: I don’t want to tease too much within that, so I have to sit back and see. But it’s a never say never. It was wonderful within season 3, while it lasted. There’s something so entertaining about seeing two people — when you’re not involved in it [chuckles] — that are just toxic for each other try their best at toxic, so that was that. Now, like I said, Mitch is embarking with a clean slate, new beginnings, and new mischief. So, we’ll see what we got in store in those cards. At the very least, he has fresh eyes, but we know how that goes. Bella was so wonderful to work with. She’s a wonderful actress, wonderful person, and she certainly left her stamp and [was] wonderful. But yeah, we’ll see what’s in store.
