The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, Delta State Council, has described the institutionalisation of the 13th-month salary for public servants in the state as a significant boost to workers’ welfare, particularly amid prevailing economic challenges in the country.
TUC chairman in the state, Wilson Asekutu, during a chat with newsmen, said the decision to institutionalise the payment to public servants in the state with legal backing demonstrated the government’s recognition of the contributions of workers to the growth and development of Delta State.
The TUC also urged the state government to sustain its engagement with labour unions and pursue policies capable of strengthening workers’ purchasing power, improving productivity and protecting their dignity.
Asekutu noted that workers who feel valued and adequately supported are more likely to remain motivated, productive and committed to their responsibilities.
He reaffirmed the union’s willingness to work with the state government in promoting good governance, sustainable development and policies that improve the living conditions of workers and other residents.
The union, however, stressed that its relationship with the government would continue to be guided by constructive engagement, mutual respect and social dialogue.
It said organised labour would commend policies that advance workers’ interests while continuing to engage the government on issues requiring attention.
Addressing workers across the state, the union said the introduction of the 13th-month salary underscored the importance of sustained dialogue between government and organised labour in achieving beneficial outcomes.
It urged public servants to reciprocate the gesture by remaining dedicated to their duties and contributing to the effective delivery of public services.
