Harry Potter Officially Proves That It Can’t Be Replaced By HBO’s TV Show

It’s becoming clear that the Harry Potter movies just can’t be replaced by HBO’s upcoming TV remake. This has, naturally, been a significant fear since the new project was first announced. The Harry Potter films are still iconic and beloved, and fans—especially those who grew up looking forward to the next big release—can’t be expected to move on so quickly. Of course, the entertainment world tends to favor whatever is bright and new, so the idea of a Harry Potter TV remake feels like an effort to erase the past and rewrite the franchise.

Still, there are some clear benefits to HBO’s new Harry Potter series. As beloved as the movies are, it can’t be denied that they didn’t quite manage to cover the entire story. A couple of hours of content just isn’t enough to capture the magic of several hundred pages. The new TV show is a chance to bring elements to the screen that were previously missing, so even die-hard movie fans may find their interest piqued. It’s just worrying that the franchise could take this too far.

It won’t be long before this whole thing turns into an all-out battle between the Harry Potter movies and the TV show. This is different from debates around the original Star Wars movies and the prequels—HBO is adapting the same story with a new cast and set. Merchandise will either feature Daniel Radcliffe or Dominic McLaughin, and given the newer and younger angle, the fear is that the latter will win out. Thankfully, ahead of HBO’s Harry Potter premiere, the larger franchise has sent a comforting message.

The Harry Potter Franchise Is Sending A Subtle Message

The Harry Potter film franchise came to a close years ago, but Warner Bros. has no intention of turning them into redundant relics. Just a few months before HBO’s Harry Potter TV show premiere, a new official trading card game has launched. Produced by Panini and officially licensed by Warner Bros, Harry Potter ALWAYS trading cards lean heavily on art and imagery from the films. The boxes feature Radcliffe’s silhouette alongside Ralph Fiennes’ Voldemort. Just a peek at the featured cards further reveals actors, character designs, and concept art, all very specifically from the films.

It’s interesting that the Harry Potter franchise would move forward with a trading card game that centers on the films when HBO’s TV show is nearly here. It wouldn’t have been surprising for us to see merchandise hastily replaced with the brand new merch designs as part of an out-with-the-old approach. Instead, Warner Bros.’ approval of Panini’s new series is a subtle announcement to Harry Potter fans everywhere that there is no intention to replace the films or erase this version of the magical world from our hearts.

In fact, Harry Potter ALWAYS feels like a very deliberate move to further immortalizethe film franchise. Even just the name of the trading card series comes across as a promise regarding the lasting nature of these films (in addition to referencing Snape’s iconic line). Regardless of how you feel about HBO’s TV show, this should at least be an encouraging sign that the Harry Potter movies and all the creatives who participated in their creation will remain a prominent part of the growing franchise.

The World Of Harry Potter Will Only Continue To Grow In Confusing Ways

While the Harry Potter movies appear to be the focus of Harry Potter ALWAYS, we can certainly assume that this new trading card series will also begin to incorporate HBO’s TV show. The general idea seems to be that these two projects can live harmoniously side by side rather than battling it out for merchandise and attention. It’s good news, but this is all bound to get a bit confusing.

HBO’s Harry Potter won’t be able to be both faithful to the books and cohesive with Warner Bros.’ original movies. As time goes on, franchise contradictions in the way of lore, character, set, and prop designs, and general worldbuilding will become even more difficult to ignore. The Wizarding World amusement park will be filled with a clash of merchandise from the films and TV show, as well as more book-centric items and concepts from the Fantastic Beasts series. As far as the franchise goes, this will mean more merch to sell. As far as fans go, it may get a tad overwhelming.
