Harrison Rich to join Sporting Green team as football trending reporter

The San Francisco Chronicle is pleased to announce that Harrison Rich has accepted the position of football trending reporter.

Rich joined the Chronicle this summer as a Sporting Green intern and quickly distinguished himself with coverage of the Golden State Valkyries’ unrelenting head coach  and the first steps toward unionizing college football players at Stanford.

Now, he will stay on after his internship period ends to cover professional and college football as the newsroom’s football trending reporter. In this role, Rich will focus on the 49ers and NFL storylines, as well as covering the Cal and Stanford football programs. 

“Harrison came in and showed he was ready from his first day, proving he was ready to handle game coverage, certainly, but he also proved ready to take bigger events in stride, from contributing to our World Cup coverage to bringing the Valkyries beat a fresh incisiveness,” said Sporting Green editor Christina Kahrl. “And put directly in the national spotlight as the writer handling the Giants the night of their pitchers’ Pride hat protest, he didn’t wilt, he met the moment. He embraces challenges, and is smart enough to know what he doesn’t know and do what a journalist should do: Ask questions.”

Rich recently graduated from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, where he was a sports editor at the Diamondback student newspaper and a men’s basketball beat writer. Previously, Rich contributed to the Washington Post’s high school sports desk, Sports Business Journal and 247Sports, among other outlets.

“This is a dream opportunity just three months removed from college. I’m extremely grateful to my editors for entrusting me with this role after my time as an intern,” Rich said. “I cannot wait to work alongside and learn from the great Eric Branch, and I’m pumped to tell important stories – not only about the 49ers, but about Cal, Stanford and other college football programs – to these passionate Bay Area fans.”

Rich is a native of Long Island, New York. He will start the new role on Aug. 31 and report to Kahrl.
