Hurricane aftermath: Georgia football reacts to win over Alabama

After all of the hype build up all week long, the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs and the No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide finally were able to line it up. Despite the weather prior to the contest, this game was never really affected by the storms during the contest. This was the biggest test of the season for both Georgia and Alabama and the matchup did not disappoint.

This game was extremely close from start to finish as most expected. However, the Bulldogs trailed at the half 14-10. The relentless Kirby Smart led Bulldogs would not lay down long and would come out in the second half enforcing the running game with a heavy dose of Dwight Phillips Jr. The 185-pounder is known for his speed but showcased a tough and gritty running style tonite finishing the game with a career-high 120 yards on 17 carries. This was the first career start for Phillips Jr. after filling in for injured leading rusher Nate Frazier. Bo Walker also added some pivotal carries in the absence of Chauncey Bowens. Walker finished the night with 69 yards on 10 carries.

Dwight Phillips impact was a major piece in the Georgia win over Alabama. Phillips Jr. gashed the Alabama defense several times throughout the game. Kirby Smart couldn’t have been more impressed and happy with his running back.

“Dwight Phillips is special…he’s so tough for his size,” Smart said.

Phillips Jr. showed that he’s more than just a speed back, he put on display that he can bring the physicality regardless of his size. He hits the hole fast and explodes through the second level with his speed. Phillips Jr. also proved to everyone around him that they can rely on him during the course of a big game.

The defense for the Georgia Bulldogs played outstanding all night long and they made the plays needed to contain the Alabama offense. They may have bent at times but they did not break. The Bulldogs defense did a great job setting up the Georgia offense and putting quarterback Gunner Stockton in position to make plays. Although, there were times the Crimson Tide would back Georgia up after a long punt, Stockton answered just about every single time.

Stockton completed 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards, one touchdown and one interception while adding six carries for 12 yards and a rushing touchdown.

Gunner Stockton was spectacular during the game and completed some NFL type throws putting the Bulldogs in great position to overtake the Alabama defense. Stockton also utilized his legs getting in the end zone once on the ground. Stockton is already gearing his focus to the next game but first, he will enjoy this hard fought victory over a tough Crimson Tide team.

Stockton stated, “Enjoy it. Like coach Smart says, enjoy and I guess we’re on to Auburn next week but this will be a good one to enjoy.”

This was the first time the Georgia Bulldogs have won a regular season game against Alabama since 2007 and it was also the first time since that year that Georgia defeated Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

This huge win for the Bulldogs certainly sets them up to claim the No 1 ranking after the Texas loss. Georgia will now set their focus to Auburn but first, they will enjoy this one for the time being.
